THE Interstate route numbering system isn't random, but rather it's calculated based on the direction of the highway which has people shocked upon learning the method.
While we might not pay too much attention to the Interstate route markers besides when we use them to get to our destination, there is actually a reason why each marker is given its number.
Every major Interstate route is designated with one or two-digit numbers, the Federal Highway Administration reported.
Routes that run north and south are given odd numbers.
Moreover, for two-digit Interstate routes, if they end in "0" they run east-west (10, 20, 30), according to CGP Grey, a YouTuber with over five million subscribers.
Routes that run east to west are given even numbers. Two-digit Interstate routes that end in "5" run north-south (5, 15, 25).
For north-south routes, the lowest numbers begin in the west and for east-west routes, the lowest numbers begin in the south.
In an explanatory Facebook post on the Interstates, someone commented: "Wow, that is interesting. Have never seen a map like this. Makes sense!"
Another user said: "I never knew this. Interesting! Thanks for sharing."
A Reddit thread was made showing an interactive map of how the Interstate routes were created.
One user wrote: "This is very cool, thank you" and shared another fun fact saying "Interstates with numbers divisible by 5 are the major highways."
Another user said: "This was pretty neat, thanks!"
