Diana, Princess of Wales and Princess Kate share more than just their royal title, in fact, the two are incredibly similar in their style too.
While Kate’s wardrobe is not entirely synonymous with looks popularised in the 80s, her off-duty outfits bear a close resemblance to those worn by her late mother-in-law.
One of the most iconic garments donned by Princess Diana was her earthy green Barbour jacket – a British heritage brand loved by a host of royals to this day.
Famously spotted with her hood up on a wet summer’s day in Barra, Scotland in 1985, the late Princess debuted the calf-grazing Barbour waxed jacket over the top of a dress, tights, and pair of black heels.
The oversized look was in keeping with her signature sartorial style and has since been recreated by Kate, who put a modern twist on the popular 80s garment.

The waxed Barbour jacket is both classic and sophisticated so it’s no wonder the garment was popularised by both Diana and King Charles in their younger years.
While the exact one worn by the Princess of Wales is unknown, the style had some notable features including the length, slightly oversized arms and classic warm lining throughout the hood and body.
Kate’s take on the smart yet practical look is a little different to her late mother-in-law but still exudes the same effortlessness thanks to its utility-style details.

The 41-year-old has been seen donning the Barbour jacket on several occasions, but the most on-trend ensemble was undoubtedly when she stepped out this April in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.
Staying true to her signature style, Kate teamed a khaki Barbour jacket – specifically the Barbour + ALEXACHUNG “Edith” corduroy-trimmed waxed-cotton jacket (£380), with a polo knit and jeans.
Just like Diana, the royal looked chic yet casual in the trendy garment which was perhaps a subtle nod to her mother-in-law’s renowned fashion legacy.
On other occasions, Kate opted for more form-fitting styles which shape her slender silhouette. One of her jackets is made from a similar shade of green to Diana’s 1985 Barbour but cut entirely differently.
In 2017, before the influence of 80s and 90s fashion returned to runways, the Princess of Wales teamed a dark turtle-neck knit with the Barbour Wax Defence Jacket In Olive Green (£249).
While the brand itself is clearly loved by Kate as much as it was by Diana, there’s one element of the late Princess’s style that the mother-of-three is yet to recreate.
Unlike King Charles’s first wife, Princess Kate wears her Barbour garments exclusively with boots or trainers rather than smart black heels.
