We spent £430k building our dream motorhome – now it’s a mini mansion with a chef’s kitchen, wine fridge & rooftop seats | The Sun

A COUPLE has shared how they decided to ditch their house and spend $430k on designing and building their dream motorhome.

Now, it’s their very own mini mansion, complete with a state of the art kitchen, wine fridge and even a rooftop seating area for them to put their feet up on when they’re on the road.

American husband and wife Robert Barkley and Julia Santos, who are from California, always dreamed of owning their own RV so that they could travel around and find a new state to call home once their children had left home.

However, when the time came, Robert and Julia couldn’t settle on a motorhome that they liked, so they decided to take action and create their luxury home on wheels from scratch.

Speaking as part of Channel 5’s Million Pound Motorhomes, which airs on Sunday 4 September at 8pm, Julia explains they’d put their heart and soul into making the £430,000 vehicle truly unique.

Julia, who works for a consultancy firm, says: “It took us about a year and a half to design and build it and we love the outcome.”

Swedish-born Robert, then admits that neither of the couple had any experience in designing motorhomes prior to investing in their own, but they’re thrilled with the outcome of their 34-foot mini mansion, which is pulled behind a truck that also carries a car.

The pair then gave a special guided tour of their VIP vehicle, starting out with their pièce de résistance – their kitchen.

Julia says: “The heart of the home is certainly the kitchen. [We have] high-quality appliances that range from a tiny waffle maker to macchiatos and cappuccinos, and also an aid mixer.”

Julia adds: “I love to cook and I love to entertain so I wanted a chef’s kitchen.”

It’s a totally life-changing experience

Elsewhere, the plush property boasts large bifold doors, a homely double bedroom with a Queen size bed, a shower room, lounge diner room, and a wood burner.

There’s also under floor storage so that they can make the most of their space, and a suntrap area on the roof so that the couple can get some much-needed R&R.

Plus, their rotating TV screen and at-home Google system allows them to enjoy movie date nights – and the curtains even close themselves.

The pair can even work remotely as there is an office area with a foldaway stand-up desk that later turns into a handy bar top. And right next to it there’s a wine fridge.

Despite initially investing in the motorhome as a stopgap until they found somewhere permanent to reside, the duo now wouldn’t have it any other way.

In fact, Robert – who previously worked in software and marketing – has even launched a new business venture offering advice to others on custom built motorhomes.

He says: “I really enjoy this life. It’s been a tremendous experience waking up every day in a new place. That’s hard to give up.”
