Royal titles and styles

Upon ascending to the throne on February 6, 1952, then-Princess Elizabeth became Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

She had decided to keep her given name as her regnal name.

At the Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Conference in 1952, it was decided that The Queen would adopt a different style relating to each country where she reigns as head of state.

This decision reflected that in each state, she acted as monarch of that particular country, regardless of her other roles.

For example, in Canada, her style was Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

Whereas in Australia, The Queen was: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God Queen of Australia and Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth.

Traditionally, the Queen's titles are listed in the order in which the realms first became Dominions.

The United Kingdom is considered the original realm.
