The same shop of items at Waitrose was £102.20 on average, meaning it was around £25.96 more expensive than Aldi.

Meanwhile, German rival Lidl was the second cheapest supermarket in August where it cost £77.90.

Asda came third at £85.99, while Sainsbury's scooped fourth position with 49 items raking up a £88.05 bill on average.

Near the bottom of the table was Morrisons which costs around £96.54 for a similar shop, with Ocado in seventh at £98.75.

According to Which?, Waitrose cost £102.20 on average.

It also compared the cost of a larger trolley at 153 items with the original 49 at all the big stores, excluding Aldi and Lidl.

These supermarkets are never included in the larger shop comparison as many brands can't be found at the discounters.

Asda was the cheapest supermarket and has been since January 2020.

It costs an average £337.50 on average for a big trolley shop at Asda, beating Sainsbury's which came in second with £360.93.

Tesco came third, costing £362.48, with Morrisons in fourth as it's around £366.64 for a big shop.

As for Ocado shoppers, they're paying around £386.84.

The latest Which? supermarket comparison comes as the cost of living crisis continues to put pressure on households.

Inflation hit a new 40-year high of 10.1% in the 12 months to July, with the Bank of England warning it could be 13% by October.

Office for National Statistics says the biggest contributor of rising inflation in July was food.

This is up from 9.8% in June.
