Brits left torn as fruit firm want tropical treat added to English breakfasts

A barmy fruit firm wants folk to put pineapple on their fry-ups.

Bosses at the company Dole point out the tropical treat is already eaten with gammon and is used as a pizza topping. But they reckon we should go further – and have it on full English brekkies.

Food historians say they might be on to something as pineapples were a prized breakfast ingredient for rich families in the 17th century.

Isabelle Spindler, general manager of Dole Sunshine Company, one of the world’s largest producers and marketers of fresh fruit, said: "The English breakfast is an institution and we can’t wait to find out the reaction to this serving suggestion."

The firm’s tins – which were a staple in kitchen cupboards during the 1960s and 1970s – has seen a recent resurgence due to the surge in the cost of fresh fruit.

Guise Bule, chairman of the English Breakfast Society, claimed: "Nobody really likes the tomatoes that usually come with a full English breakfast so why shouldn’t we swap them for a grilled pineapple slice?"
