Doctor reveals why you should NEVER flush a toilet while still sitting down | The Sun

A DOCTOR has revealed the alarming reason why you should never flush the toilet while sitting down.

In a video posted to TikTok, doctor Mehraveh Seyyed Sayyah, a medical student and influencer, said it can leave you with spots.

"When the toilet is flushed without closing the lid, small droplets, containing bacteria can be released into the air and travel up two metres," the medic explained.

Toilet bowls tend to host lots of nasty bacteria – especially in the moments after you've used it.

Dangerous bugs like E.coli and staphylococcus can be flung into the air and onto your skin, potentially leaving it covered in infections and spots.

E.coli can cause severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhoea and even kidney failure.

The symptoms usually last up to seven days if there are no complications, but some infections can be severe and may be life-threatening.

Staphylococcus, or staph, usually only causes skin problems like boils, spots and rashes.

But if it gets into the bloodstream, it can cause bloodstream infections, pneumonia, or bone and joint infections.

"To prevent this, it is advisable to always close the lid before flushing," the expert said.

She also suggested maintaining "cleanliness and freshness in the bathroom" to prevent the buildup of excessive bugs which could lead to acne.

A video, produced by US scientists, showed why it's so important to shut the toilet seat before you flush it.

The experts used bright green lasers and cameras to reveal for the first time how they are rapidly ejected from a lidless public cubicle.

The experts from the University of Colorado, found the poo and pee particles that shoot out of the loo when you flush.

The droplets can also linger in the toilet after several flushes, leaving toilet users at increased risk of inhaling a deadly germ.

The disconcerting results, published in the Journal Scientific Reports, also shed light how the smaller particles can escape nose hairs and reach deeper into one's lungs – making them more dangerous to humans.
