An expert has revealed how to successfully get Botox without the botch and avoid becoming a viral sensation from an injection gone wrong.

Med spa founder Carol Eisenstat – the medical director at Line Eraser MD – shared her top tips to ensuring your prepped and ready to get the best result from cosmetic injectables with DailyMail.com – to make sure you don’t end up as a filler fail.

Before getting injections, Carol says to avoid intense facial exercise, as you want to keep your muscles as much of a ‘natural’ state as possible.

‘Try not to engage in vigorous facial exercises or expressions immediately before your Botox appointment,’ she suggested. ‘This helps the injector assess your natural muscle state.’

The professional shared how she would avoid alcohol or caffeine before getting Botox, and not engaging in physical activity after to let it settle

Expert’s tips on how to avoid a filler fail or Botox botch

Botox

  • BEFORE:  Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption
  • AFTER: Avoid intense physical activity and applying anything – including ice- on the face

Filler

  • BEFORE: Avoid salt and spicy foods
  • AFTER: Avoid any work on the face or mouth, such as dental procedures and facial treatments

It’s also important to reduce the amount of alcohol and caffeine consumed, as they can dry out your skin and make it more delicate before your procedure.

‘Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption in the 24 hours leading up to your treatment, as they can contribute to bruising,’ Carol suggested.

She also suggests avoiding socializing or hitting the gym immediately after your appointment.

‘Some temporary redness or swelling may occur, which you may want to allow time to settle,’ she advised.

‘Avoid intense physical activity for at least 24 hours after Botox,’ she continued. ‘Exercise increases blood flow and may disperse the Botox solution from the injection. Which essentially means effect of Botox may not last as long as intended.’

While it may be tempting, it’s also important to avoid any  unnecessary manipulation of the injected area for the first 24 hours after treatment.

‘[This is] to allow the Botox to settle,’ she explained. ‘That includes applying ice and definitely avoiding the use of face rollers.’

As for fillers, Carol suggests avoiding anything that will lead to excess swelling – such as salty foods.

‘Minimize salt intake,’ she instructed. ‘Many dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin that has a strong ability to bind to and hold onto water molecules.’

She continued: ‘When injected, hyaluronic acid fillers not only add volume to the treated area but also draw in and retain moisture, which can contribute to a more youthful and hydrated appearance.’

Carol suggests avoiding anything that will lead to excess swelling – such as salty foods – before fillers, and not eating anything spicy after as it will exacerbate the redness

Carol often shares before and  after pictures of her patients to social media

One of the reasons  hyaluronic acid fillers are so popular to smooth over fine lines, wrinkles, and areas where the skin has lost volume, is its ability to ability to attract water.

‘[This] helps to plump and rejuvenate the skin providing a natural and refreshed look,’ Carol explained.

She added: ‘Therefore, I advise my patients to limit consumption of salty foods in the days leading up to their filler treatments to reduce the risk of of swelling.’

The injectables expert also says to steer clear of spicy foods, saying to opt for a milder meal before getting fillers.

‘Spicy foods – especially extremely spicy ones – can lead to increased blood flow and potential facial flushing,’ she shared.

Carol said this could lead to a longer period of post-filler redness and make the process less comfortable.

‘I recommend opting for milder food choices before your filler appointment to ensure a more pleasant experience,’ she said.

Another expert tip is to postponing  any dental procedures or teeth cleaning appointments for a few weeks after getting lip fillers, as the pressure on your lips during dental work can affect the filler’s distribution.

‘Dental procedures can expose the mouth and lips to bacteria present in the oral environment,’ she pointed out. ‘If you have recently had lip fillers, the injection sites may still be healing and more susceptible to infection. Any introduction of bacteria into these areas can increase the risk of infection.’

While it may be tempting to schedule in a facial to accompany your smooth new skin, Carol suggests against it, as they can disrupt the filler’s placement.

‘Avoid facials, chemical peels, or other facial treatments for a week or so after filler injections’ she advises.

Social media is full of botched filler and Botox warnings – with TikTok user Claudia Simich revealing earlier this year how her lips swelled up after she got them injects

Meanwhile, Los Angeles native Jessica Burko was left in tears after her lips swelled to double their size following a filler appointment

‘Massaging, exfoliation, or other vigorous techniques used in facials can potentially lead to uneven distribution or displacement of the filler material, compromising the desired results.’

After both procedures, Carol said there were some simple ways to not irritating the injections.

She recommends avoid face-down positions like yoga’s downward dog position for extended periods, as they can affect the distribution of filler and impact results.

Heat can cause swelling and discomfort, so as much as a nice, hot shower or sauna could be tempting, it’s best to avoid things generate excess heat production.

Her last tip is easier said than done, but important – patience.

‘Results may not be immediately apparent, especially with Botox and dermal fillers,’ she said. ‘It can take a few days to a couple of weeks to see the full effect so trust the process.’

Unfortunately, botched cosmetic injectables aren’t  completely uncommon.

Last year, a woman has revealed that she was left permanently deformed after a knock-off filler procedure given to her by a dentist in Brazil went terribly wrong.

Mariana Michelini, 34, from Matao, Brazil, was injected with what she thought was hyaluronic acid in December 2020 – but she said it turned out to be a completely different chemical called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which resulted in her face becoming permanently disfigured.

After the PMMA made her skin become swollen and puffy – and she has since undergone three different surgical procedures in an attempt to fix the damage done by the botched procedure.
