Children were paddling in the shallow water at The Warren beach near Folkestone when two boys spotted a fin. The sighting was approximately 150ft from shore. The beach is less than ten miles from the White Cliffs of Dover.

The two boys were paddling in the water when they shouted: “Is that a shark?” before running away.

Emma Horne, 30, was at the beach with her two sons, Finley, seven, and Alby, five, at the time.

The mum-of-two, who lives locally, recorded a video of the fin.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 7pm.

Speaking about the shark sighting, Ms Horne said: “We couldn’t believe it.

“The boys were playing in the water so I got them out quickly.

“There were two young boys who spotted it and were clearly scared — they ran away and one of them shouted, ‘is that a shark?’.

“I warned people and a woman quickly called her dog out of the sea.

“She was worried.”

She added: “Finley and Alby were playing with their nets so we told them to get out then watched it from a distance.

“They were loving it afterwards — they asked if they could catch it!”

Experts have suggested it might be a basking shark.

They are commonly found in UK waters during the summer months and are generally harmless to humans.

They can grow up to 12 metres in length but only eat plankton.

Steve Harris, boss of fishing firm Dentex Charters said: “I first thought it was a basking shark but we do get a lot of tope here, which could be feeding on mackerel shoals inshore.

“It’s definitely a shark, though.”
