SHOPPERS are "heartbroken" after a high street fashion retailer announced it will be pulling the plug on one of its stores.

Matalan is shutting its clearance store in Blythswood Retail Park in Renfrew next month.

The high street giant, which has 250 stores, has several of these shops across the UK where it sells items at a discounted price.

Posting on its Facebook page, the Blythswood Retail Park store said: "Starting tomorrow Wednesday 30th August we will be commencing with our closing down reductions. Store opens at 9am.

"There will be an additional 30% off the lowest marked price on all items in store."

Wilko puts job cuts on HOLD in relief for workers – but it's not all good news

The Sun has contacted Matalan for a comment.

Retailers have been feeling the pinch since the pandemic while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to soaring inflation.

High energy costs and a shift to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.

Matalan isn't the only retailer pulling the plug on some of its stores in September.

Iceland, Wetherspoons, Shoezone, Homebase, Pets at Home and House of Fraser are all closing stores next month.

The survival of high street giant Wilko is also up in the air at the moment.

The retailer collapsed into administration earlier this month, putting its 400 stores at risk of closure and 12,500 jobs in jeopardy.

But a second last-minute bid to rescue the ailing business has since been received by M2 Capital, The Guardian reports.

However, it isn't all doom and gloom for shoppers.

Some retailers are opening or relocating their stores.

B&M is opening half a dozen new branches after a string of closures.

It's also relocating a string of shops across the UK.

The first new shop opened on August 16.

Here's the full list of stores opening in September:

  • Switch Island, Liverpool – (September 9) – relaunch
  • Eastbourne (September 14)
  • Stockton (September 14)
  • Leven Garden Centre (September 20) – garden centre only
  • Hinkley (September 23)
  • Wigan (September 29)

Poundland has recently confirmed that it is opening 15 stores across the UK.
