‘A statement coat is key to any outfit in the fall and winter as it’s the first thing people see when you walk in the room,’ said New York-based coat designer Morgan Clifford.

Fact: Temperatures drop during winter months, but that doesn’t mean your style quotient has to.

Show-stopping outerwear can add a whole lot of heat and next-level sophistication to any ensemble.

Unexpected colors, a clever mingling of materials, textures and details, plus interesting shapes, turn cold-weather coats into wondrous works of art.

For this upcoming season, it’s ‘what’s on the outside’ that really matters so add a great coat to your holiday wish list!

According to Morgan, founder of Morgan Clifford NY, your coat  should reflect your personal style with a little bit of flair.

Katy Perry stepped out in November wearing a blue long-line Charlotte Simone coat. The pop-star topped the 100% faux fur outwear over black slacks and accessorized with Gucci sling-back kitten heels

A coat in your favorite hue is sure to lift your spirits

Go beyond safe neutrals and try a coat in a head-turning color on for size.

Wearing uplifting colors (warm shades like red, orange and yellow) can be the fastest way to chase away any feelings of winter blues.

Bright shades are surprisingly very versatile and go with everything. If you’re daring, try a loud hue like Barbie pink or neon green.

‘You can literally wear anything under a statement coat – from sweatpants to black jeans a basic T – and your outfit is instantly elevated,’ says Morgan.

If you want to stand out in a crowd, exclusivity is key. Charlotte Simone produces in limited quantities to ensure a carefully curated, creative, exclusive and small-scale production. Designs are inspired by vintage silhouettes, textures, shades, street style and her grandma’s wardrobe.

Style tip: Allow your coat to be the pop of color your outfit needs by pairing it with monochromatic separates or team it with other primary and secondary colors to instantly create an electric effect.

Stassi Schroeder Clark hit the red carpet of the 91st Hollywood Christmas Parade in a little black dress topped by Cinq à Sept’s ‘Gravis’ coat adorned with shimmering crystal ivy embellishments

Fun details are conversation starters

You want a statement coat that is versatile – something that works with most of the pieces in your wardrobe – but features fun details that make it more exciting than the average outerwear.

Details like vintage buttons, color-contrasting piping or bohemian fringe will do the trick.

‘Not only does a statement coat keep you warm, but serves as a chic fashion moment even if you are super casual underneath, says Morgan who designed Stassi’s daughter Hartford Charlie Rose’s coat.

Ashley Benson is one of many celebs to step out in a Morgan Clifford NY leopard coat

A fierce print will make you feel unstoppable

Trends come and go but animal prints are forever chic.

From leopard to cheetah to snake and python, giving your look a lift with these wild skin patterns remains evergreen.

Nicky Hilton was spotted on the streets of New York in a black and white animal-print coat with faux fur trimming by Charlotte Simone.

‘I tend to always look for leopard print or herringbone,’ says Morgan who has many leopard coats in her collection – one spotted on Ashley Benson.

A fierce outer-layer has the power to grab attention anywhere it’s worn.

Style tip: To really turn heads, wear an animal print coat in the daytime with casual basics à la Nicky Hilton. Archaic fashion guidelines suggest wearing one animal print at a time and keeping the rest of your look classic with clean lines and neutral shades – but YOLO, feel free to go wild with an animal print bag or shoes.

Emily Ratajkowski was spotted on the streets of New York in a black crop top and blue jeans. The supermodel balanced her sexy look with an oversized menswear-inspired double breasted coat

An oversize silhouette says downtown cool

‘The oversized look is on trend and is extremely comfortable,’ shares Morgan.

Adding: ‘You can be wearing sweatpants and t-shirt and throw on an oversized coat and the outfit is instantly elevated.’

Exaggerated silhouettes like the style Emily dons leave plenty of room for a chunky sweater or a hooded sweatshirt underneath to stay cozy when temps drastically dip.

Style tip: Create contrast by wearing fitted bottoms – or thigh-high boots – underneath.  Cuff the sleeves to keep your look proportionate and opt for solid separates for an overall clean aesthetic.
