I lock myself inside our house when I’m at home but my husband says I’m being too cautious

Locking your door when you leave the house is a given – but what about when you’re actually at home?

One British mum took her security concerns to a thread on the ‘Am I being unreasonable?’ section of Mumsnet.

She revealed that her husband thought she was being ‘overly cautious’ for locking her house door in their leafy suburbs – but found opinion firmly split on the mater.

The woman said her other half had made her feel like she was being ‘a bit obsessive’ but many others commented otherwise, with one saying: ‘You’d have to be a bl**** idiot to not lock your door.’

The woman elaborated on her concerns in her post, saying: ‘We live in a pleasant suburb in a peaceful neighbourhood where there is a very low crime rate’ but went on to caveat this with: ‘Occasionally over the years people have had someone walk in through their unlocked front door in broad daylight – even when they were in’.

Elsewhere, some users sided with the woman’s husband with one admitting: ‘I don’t lock ours in the day, unless I’m leaving the (teen) children home alone’, although this was a controversial position to hold for some – one person responded: ‘People who don’t lock their doors are very foolish’.

The same user went on to claim that the number of Mumsnet threads on burglaries was reason enough to lock your door when you’re indoors, saying many contain the phrase ‘I live rurally/a really safe area’, just like in this post.

Many more users took to the British social forum with their thoughts, using practical reasoning to make their case.

One said: ‘I always lock my doors even if I am in, why take the risk?’

Another Mumsnet user said that the pros of spending a few seconds locking your door outweigh the potentially disastrous cons, with more users agreeing: ‘I think it’s sensible. Someone could take my car keys and it could be hours before I realised the car had gone’.
