I love my daughter’s name but people say it is slang for drugs

A woman who enjoys posting about her life online has gone viral due to her daughter’s unusual name, as some people have said it sounds like a slang word for drugs. However, she has said her daughter’s name is “beautiful” and is trying to rise above the judgemental comments she sees on social media.

Tenille Bain is a 33-year-old mother who decided to name her baby girl ‘Chree’ which is pronounced the same way as ‘tree’. Her partner Michael, age 29, was the one who first jokingly suggested the name and Tenille fell in love with it.

The name’s spelling was changed to be more unique in honour of Tenille’s mother, Cheryl. The couple also decided to honour Tenille’s grandmother Mary Jane as well with the name, making the baby’s full name Chree Mary Jane.

However, the Canadian mother was gotten annoyed at other’s people reactions to the name as many people have suggested it sounds like a nickname for drugs.

The Canadian mother enjoys posting on social media and has gone viral on TikTok with nearly 2 million views after Tenille replied to a user who asked how to pronounce her children’s names.

In the video, Tenille said: “My daughter’s name is Chree, spelt C-H-R-E-E and her full name is Chree Mary Jane, My son’s name is Tevye spelt T-E-V-Y-E and his full name is Tevye Raymond Wesley.”

However, people in the comment section were quick to pass judgement on Tenille’s name choice. One popular comment on the TikTok video said: “Well they’ll never get their names on a pencil” while somebody else said: “Some of y’all think you’re naming a pet.”

Other people in the comments described the names as ‘trailer park’ and another popular comment said: “Let’s normalise naming kids proper names so it doesn’t affect their future.”

She said: “I feel protective of my kids – but I also see it as an opportunity to teach them not to be prejudiced or judgemental.”

On TikTok, Tenille posted a video defending her daughter’s name. In the caption of the video, she said: “Why do we have to have easy names? I love my name and my daughter’s name. If you don’t say it correctly, then that is on you.”

In the video, Tenille quoted a poem by Warsan Shire that she said she has saved on her phone so that she always keeps it with her. She said: “Give your daughter difficult names, give your daughter’s names that command the full use of the tongue. My name makes you want to tell me the truth. My name doesn’t allow me to trust anyone that cannot pronounce it right.”

She added that the poet had a “beautiful name” and it was also a “beautiful poem”.

However, not all of the comments Tenille has gotten online have been negative. One commentator on TikTok said Tenille’s daughter’s name is “cute” and said they “love different names.”

Another person wrote: “Ignore everybody else, I think they’re pretty” and someone else said: “Why is everyone mad at these names? I’d rather have a thoughtful and cute name any day of the week.”

Tenille does have one message for those who make judgemental comments about her children’s names online. She said: “If I could say one thing to the TikTok haters about my kids’ names, it would be this – they’re names.

“They’re beautiful, and you need to be mindful when talking about children.”
