An Australian woman has revealed her regret over moving to London after sending 355 unsuccessful job applications, spending $17,300 on relocating and living expenses, and having her first date cancel on her.
Amelia, 28, was hopeful when she decided to move to the UK from Sydney because of the perceived easy transition.
‘Australians typically move over to London because it’s simple to get the visa, you’re moving from one English-speaking country to another, and there’s reciprocal healthcare under the Commonwealth,’ she said in a video.
Amelia was also excited because she thought the English city was the ‘epicenter of Europe’ as it allows you to travel to other European cities quite easily.
‘You can just take a train from here and go to Paris for a weekend, or hop on a flight and be in Spain in two hours.’

While she enjoyed several trips to places including Portofino and Lisbon, the reality of the situation soon sunk in.
‘The size of the city and perceived opportunity here in addition to unlimited options for travelling made it an enticing place to want to come and live,’ she explained. ‘But is so difficult to live and work here.’
Amelia has applied for hundreds of marketing jobs but often never receives replies or is simply told she ‘wasn’t right’ for the role.
She also made a post claiming she felt like a ‘penniless beggar’ as the cost of living soars – and she’s also spent $17,300 in the three months she’s been in London.

Amelia recently had to work an 11 hour shift with a 20-minute break at $23 an hour – which is just under the national living wage in London.
‘I can’t stay here and do slave labour,’ she told her family in a text message.
In addition, Amelia is struggling with the sun setting before 4pm – and other Australians have also complained about the harsh London weather.
‘I didn’t move here for the weather for sure,’ she joked. ‘It’s so cold and it’s not even winter yet, I’m scared.’
The young woman was also cancelled on by her first ever London date – after another Aussie recently went on the ‘worst date of her life’.
Amelia’s posts received a lot of attention, and she thanked everyone who reached out to support her.
‘I am currently in the same position. I totally understand how you feel. The loneliness is the worst,’ one said.
‘It takes six months before you really have your feet under the table. It’s super hard but worth it. I struggled at the beginning and I’m still here six years later,’ an Australian wrote.
