Wetherspoons is slashing food and drink prices next week for one day only | The Sun

WETHERSPOONS is slashing food and drink prices next week but only for one day.

The pub giant is giving customers a 7.5% discount at all of its 827 pubs.

But the offer will only be available for one day – on Thursday September 14 which is tax equality day.

Prices will be cut to highlight the benefit of a permanent VAT reduction within the hospitality industry.

For example, a shopper spending £10 at a Wetherspoons pub will pay £9.25.

If you're planning on getting a large breakfast, which can cost you up to £7.21, you'll only pay £6.67 that day.

On September 14 however, shoppers will pay £3.16, that's a 69p saving.

Tim Martin, Wetherspoon’s founder and chairman, said: "The biggest threat to the hospitality industry is the vast disparity in tax treatment among pubs, restaurants and supermarkets.

"Supermarkets pay zero VAT in respect of food sales, whereas pubs and restaurants pay 20%.

"This tax benefit allows supermarkets to subsidise the selling price of beer.

"Customers coming to Wetherspoon’s pubs on Thursday September 14 will find the price of their food and drinks to be lower than normal."

It comes soon after it was revealed that Wetherspoons would be closing another of its town centre pubs within weeks.

The Widow Frost in Mansfield has told its customers it will be shutting its doors for the final time on September, 22.

The popular Mansfield pub was one of more than 30 locations put up for sale last September.

It comes as the pub chain recently confirmed that it has since closed 29 sites and still has a dozen more up for sale.
