A health coach has shared a possible reason for why some people don’t feel hungry in the morning and why you shouldn’t skip breakfast.
Sarah, who has a large online following for sharing holistic lifestyle tips, said people who don’t feel like eating breakfast when they wake up may have dysregulated cortisol and could be ‘running on stress hormones’.
Sydney nutritionist Susie Burrell told FEMAIL while Sarah’s claim is ‘not always true’ it can impact morning hunger levels and shared some ways to ‘reset your hunger’.
She added that regularly skipping breakfast can cause your metabolism to slow down during the first half of the day.
‘Not being hungry first thing in the morning does not mean it’s a good thing. That means your body is running on stress hormones,’ Sarah explained in a video.

‘So if you are hungry first thing in the morning that means that your cortisol is regulated.’
She also said not feeling hungry in the morning could be a sign of a dysregulated cortisol issue.
‘Dysregulated cortisol does not mean you have a cortisol problem or that your cortisol is too high or too low,’ she said. ‘Dysregulated cortisol along with circadian rhythm can mean that your cortisol is spiking at the incorrect time.’
The health coach said cortisol, which increases your appetite, should be spiking first thing in the morning.

‘Throughout the day, your cortisol should start to come down, that’s normal, then in the evening your cortisol should be at its lowest and then melatonin production should start,’ she said.
Susie, who is a dietitian and The Nutrition Couch podcast co-host said ‘cortisol is not the key reason’ for having no hunger in the morning.
She said it may impact whether someone is hungry in the morning but not more than other common causes including eating too much the night before and not having 10-12 hours without food overnight.
Some people have been ‘programmed’ into skipping breakfast meaning they have never eaten much so their metabolism is slower in the first half of the day.

Susie said cortisol may impact morning hunger but not more than other common causes including eating too much the night before and not having 10-12 hours without food overnight
Susie said drinking coffee also delays appetites and hormonal issues like insulin resistance or polycystic ovary syndrome can impact eating behaviour and eating patterns.
‘The best way to reset hunger, so you are working with circadian rhythm instead of against it is to eat earlier and lighter at night allowing at least 10 hours without food overnight, exercise early and wait until hungry to have tea or coffee,’ she said.
‘If (you’re) not hungry just start eating within an hour or two of waking or by 8am,’ she said.
Susie recommended a small protein rich meal like a slice toast with a slice of cheese to get the metabolism going.
