I’m A Celeb’s Fatima Whitbread’s cockroach drama explained after she kept critter

Fatima Whitbread is bravely heading back into the jungle tonight for the hugely anticipated I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! All Stars spin off.

The former Olympic javelin thrower, 62, has revealed that she’s nervous about taking on another round of grueling bushtucker trials – and is still haunted by one in particular from her original series.

Back in 2011, Fatima’s head was placed in a large plastic fish bowl as various creepy crawlies were poured over her head in rounds.

For the final round of the trial, the former athlete was forced to grin and bear it as seven and a half thousand cockroaches were poured on her head.

Already quite a grim proposition, the challenge was made worse when one particularly tricky insect wedged itself in Fatima’s nose, forcing her to repeatedly mumble, “it’s up my nose.”

As she emerged from the challenge, medics rushed to her aid as she struggled to remove it herself.

The star repeatedly bent over and tried to expel the critter by sniffing aggressively, but to no avail.

“It feels like it’s wriggling about,” she told medic Bob.

Fatima was eventually able to remove one creature, only to realise that another was still wedged inside!

Luckily, the medical team were on hand to help and, with a syringe of water, were able to safely remove the creature – which Fatima then proudly held out for the cameras.

“Bit off-putting though, isn’t it?” the star joked to hosts Ant and Dec in a chat after the trial.

Although most fans will have assumed that Fatima would have wanted to put the whole nasty experience behind her, the ex javelin thrower revealed years later that she had kept the insect as a souvenir!

In a special episode in 2020, I’m A Celebrity… A Jungle Story, Fatima explained that the cockroach didn’t “last long” after being removed from her nose and, after it passed on, she had decided to keep the body and have it waxed.

Fatima shared that she had put the creature in a glass container and nicknamed him LB, which is short for “little b*****d”.

She had previously said that the clip had been edited for time and that “it was up there for 20 minutes” despite it seemingly being flushed out within minutes on-screen.

Ahead of her decision to re-enter camp for the All Star series, Fatima confessed to OK! Magazine that it does “concern me if it happens again.”

The star, who shares a personal connection to South Africa, also admitted that it was her “scariest trial” but that she still had “a lot of fun” and was looking forward to taking on the challenge of the jungle once again!
