People are so intimidated by a goth's appearance that they have thrown holy water at her.

Jordan Bovee, 28, from Minnesota, USA, is a visual artist with an eclectic lifestyle, views and aesthetics.

While she often meets people who are fascinated by her alternative style, some other people’s reactions have been less than friendly.

“Some of my personal favourite reactions have ranged from people wanting photos taken with me, usually to show someone they know who also loves this style, to a whole group of teenagers screaming and running away,” she exclusively told Daily Star.

“I've had people throw holy water at me, try to perform exorcisms on me and even stop in their cars to ask questions.

“It almost always makes me smile or laugh. It's been an interesting life, to say the least.”

Jordan has been dressing uniquely ever since she was a young child and her style has just become more extreme over time.

The reason behind the way she dresses is that she has always found fashion, art and makeup an incredibly versatile means of expressing herself.

“I have been dressing differently since I was very young, as soon as I could dress myself, really,” she said.

“I never liked looking "normal" and found myself feeling the most comfortable and truly myself when covered in dark clothing and makeup.

“It started with large earrings, stacking dozens of bracelets and necklaces, then I eventually discovered the whole world of fashion and makeup and the rest is history, as they say.”

It can take Jordan anywhere from five minutes to two hours to do her impressive makeup, depending on the look she’s going for.

While she does receive a lot of comments from strangers, as the gothic style has become more accepted over the years, the reactions are much more positive than when she was a child.

“I was heavily bullied growing up, but the people who find the style cool and inspiring are what I prefer to focus on,” she said.

“It takes some practice, but you eventually learn to ignore the negatives and not let it affect you.”

What is often a shock to people, is how friendly Jordan actually is.

She told us people are often surprised to find out that she’s not as scary or mean as she looks.

“I dedicate most of my life to living the happiest, most fulfilling life I can and hopefully inspire others to do the same and express themselves as much as possible,” she said.

“I want to be a safe haven for other weirdos like me and let them know it's okay to be themselves unapologetically.”

Jordan also refers to herself as a Cenobite, which is a term that comes from Clive Barker's book Hellbound Heart and Hellraiser movies.

The Cenobites are fictional extra-dimensional, seemingly demonic beings that continue to appear in fiction.

“[They] are these fascinating beings that live in another dimension, often with their own origin stories of how they ended up ‘that way’,” she explained.

“They have been a primary inspiration to me as I often feel like I've never been 'normal' and have found body modification as another medium to add to one's uniqueness.

“Healing any trauma and pain life throws you, helps develop your character and ultimately aids in your growth. I just deeply resonate with all of that.”
