The newest star of BBC Two and HBO drama Industry almost found herself studying International Relations at Durham University.

Chelsea-born Indy Lewis, who was raised in Kingston, south-west London, had applied to ‘normal university’ and was gearing up for an undergraduate degree when she decided to have a ‘crisis gap year’ instead.

During this time she frantically applied for drama schools before landing a role in swashbuckling TV series La Fortuna alongside Hollywood heavyweight Stanley Tucci in 2020.

Now the 21-year-old has been cast as brash graduate Venetia Berens in series two of the HBO finance drama, which will be back on our screens later this year.

The banking drama, which follows a group of graduates at a high-flying City firm, made headlines with its first series which featured graphic scenes of sex and drugs.

Indy, who also starred in La Fortuna alongside Stanley Tucci, is set to ruffle feathers in the new series of Industry as she clashes with older graduates

Raunchy: During one episode of series one there were six different scenes where characters were fully or partially nude, including several graphic sex scenes, leading viewers to declare it is ‘more bonking than banking’. Pictured, Harper and her ex-boyfriend Todd have sex

The second series has already premiered on HBO in the US but has yet to receive its air date in the UK.

Indy’s character is an ambitious Gen Z young woman who refuses to take orders from her older and more experienced colleagues, butts heads with Yasmin Kara-Hanani (played by Marisa Abela).

When Yasmin, whose character has now moved up to a more senior role within the graduates, asks Venetia to pick up lunch for the team, the junior graduate, who is fresh out of Oxford University, says no.

Speaking to Tatler about her stubborn character, she Indy said: ‘She knows what she wants and how to get it.

‘She’s not going to be cowed by the hierarchy and the mass of men in suits.’

However, while she said she envies the ‘boldness’ of her character, Indy admitted her own qualities don’t align with Venetia’s at all.

‘I think I could probably learn from her,’ she said.

Indy told Tatler magazine she came very close to ending up at ‘normal uni’ studying international relations at the University of Durham

As the viewer learns more about Venetia it becomes clear she was not raised with wealth and was the first person in her family to study at Oxford – despite how she presents herself to her co-workers.

The budding young actress also revealed some behind the scenes snippets – including that actors had the help of a financial advisor on set who helped them understand the technical jargon in the script.

She also revealed she initially auditioned for the first series of Industry and had a total of 10 meetings with producers before landing the role of Venetia.

As well as auditions, Indy said she was invited in to meet with people and test her chemistry with other actors.

During this time she frantically applied for drama schools before landing a role in swashbuckling TV series La Fortuna (pictured) alongside Hollywood heavyweight Stanley Tucci

When she was finally cast and read the script, she was gobsmacked to see Venetia was a much bigger part than she’d initially thought.

Among the young talent Indy is joining in the Industry cast is 25-year-old Marisa Abela, who starred in some steamy scenes in the first series of the HBO drama.

Playing ambitious graduate Yasmin, Marisa filmed raunchy clips with the character’s boyfriend Seb (played by Jonathan Barnwell).

And if Brighton star Marisa’s career trajectory is anything to go by following her casting in Industry, Indy has big things in store too.

Marisa is currently in filming for the new Barbie movie, in which she has been cast alongside Hollywood stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Speaking to British Vogue, the 25-year-old said: ‘I really don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, so all I’ll say is, the photos you’ve seen barely scratch the surface.’
