Faced with daily stresses, many people — including celebrities — experience mental health challenges. Even one of the most beloved royal family members has opened up about her mental health issues. Kate Middleton has discussed her parenting struggles and how she copes with “mom guilt.”
Mental Health Awareness Month is observed in May
Though it’s essential to recognize the importance of mental health year-round, millions celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month in May.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed annually since 1949. In recent years, NAMI has adopted specific themes and messages to help raise awareness for mental illness and those who face challenges with their mental health.
In 2022, NAMI recognized Mental Health Awareness Month through the theme “Together for Mental Health.”
How does Kate Middleton cope with ‘mom guilt’?
It can be hard to open up about mental health struggles, but sometimes, seeing a public figure talk about their own issues can help reduce the stigma and make it easier to discuss complex topics.
Kate Middleton knows this and has used her platform to discuss her challenges with mental health.
In a 2020 podcast, Middleton discussed the difficulties of motherhood. The Duchess of Cambridge told Happy Mum, Happy Baby host Giovanna Fletcher that she had a tough time with all three of her pregnancies and experienced severe morning sickness.
She also admitted that, like millions of other mothers, she experiences “mom guilt” — worrying about not spending enough time with or doing the most for her children.
“Yes, absolutely — and anyone who doesn’t, as a mother, is actually lying. Yes, all the time. There’s such a pull, but I am such a hands-on mum, and whatever you’re doing, you want to make sure you’re doing the uttermost best job you can for your children.”
The royal added that it’s a “constant challenge” to deal with “mom guilt” and that she believes every mother faces it in some form — from stay-at-home moms to those who juggle full-time jobs and family.
So, how does Kate Middleton deal with those guilty feelings?
The duchess said she finds simple joys with her family to be one of the best ways to combat stress. She mentioned that she enjoys going for walks outdoors together or engaging in fun conversations with her kids.
Other celebrities have opened up about ways to improve their mental health
Kate Middleton is far from the only public figure who has discussed mental health awareness.
Kendall Jenner has long discussed her experiences with anxiety, especially social anxiety. In April, she revealed on Instagram that she turns to journaling, meditating, and expressing gratitude to deal with stress.
Superstar singer Selena Gomez has also talked about her self-esteem issues. “Taking a break from social media was the best decision that I’ve ever made for my mental health,” Gomez recently told InStyle. “The unnecessary hate and comparisons went away once I put my phone down.”
Though mental health issues don’t have a one-size-fits-all treatment, some of these small tips might help others optimize their mental health.
