King Charles and Queen Camilla split their time between several properties, and unlike the late Queen Elizabeth, they don’t live in Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.
The couple’s London base is Clarence House and it is here where they have three bedrooms.
Married members of the Royal Family traditionally have separate bedrooms; Princess Kate and Prince William, for example, slept separately when living in Kensington Palace, whilst Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip also slept apart, reportedly in entirely different wings.
It has been long rumoured the new King and his wife have three bedrooms, one each and one to share, however, this has never been confirmed.
As for why Charles and Camilla retire to different rooms in the evening, it is apparently because of the King’s health; Charles has well-known back pain, and sleeping alone is believed to help ease back pain.
Royal expert Joshua Rom suggested separate bedrooms because of the couple’s hectic schedules, and especially for their age, they prefer to relax separately.
It isn’t just at Clarence House that the couple sleep apart, but also when they’re in the country.
King Charles has Highgrove Mansion and Camilla is said to have her own room there but does not usually spend time there, but at Ray Mill instead, where she has all her family close by.

Sleeping separately is also said to be the “secret” to the couple’s “long-lasting marriage”, according to a friend, that’s because it allows them to have their own designated space, as well as a shared space.
One source told the Daily Mail: “[His Royal Highness] has a room with a double bed, decorated to his own taste, then Camilla has her own room with a double bed, decorated just the way she likes it.
“In addition, they have a shared bedroom with a double bed that they can use whenever they like. The arrangement suits them perfectly.”
