The obvious downside is the cost. A meal prep service is always going to cost a lot more than if you made the meals for yourself.

One of the three-day meal plans we saw, with an average daily intake of around 2,031 calories, would set you back around £72 a week.

Obviously, you can tailor your plan around your budget, calorie intake and dietary requirements, which will alter your costs.

Getting asked to review a meal prep service is always a treat: do you want to not cook for a few days? Yes, please!

So I was pretty happy to give Lions Prep a go and give my air fryer a break.

Anyone else who’s tried a meal delivery service before knows the drill with delivery: receive large, heavy box from courier, pry it open and hope your food hasn’t leaked everywhere.

Thankfully, Lions Prep did a good job of packing my meals, so it was an uneventful delivery.

The packaging from Lions Prep is designed to be as sustainable as possible, so it’s mostly paper-based (compostable or recyclable) with plastic lids (recyclable).

Step 1, complete. Everything was packed away in the fridge, ready for a new day.

Now, full disclosure, while I think Lions Prep meals are designed for people who like to control their diet for health, time and performance reasons, they’re probably not designed for hangover munchies.

Nonetheless, I was grateful to have a ready supply of tasty food available to get me through a rough Saturday morning on the sofa.

Happily, every meal I tried on day one was great, with a Greek-style beef burger, cauliflower steak with truffle and sage mash, and chicken shawarma all going down a treat.

The only misfire I tried on day two was a bacon and egg breakfast pot; some things just aren’t made to be reheated in a microwave.

But a pancake breakfast box, followed later by a beef curry, was on the money, so the quality of the meals I tried from Lions Prep was, overall, very good.

The real joy of the meals, though, aside from the taste, is the speed; having the option to have healthy balanced meals ready in four minutes and under from the microwave was a treat and something I’d be happy to do more.

However, when compared to making meals yourself, Lions Prep is pretty pricey. The smaller three-day meal plans would still set you back £57 per week, which my Monzo tells me is a little more than I’d expect to spend on groceries for the whole seven days

So you’ll have to be earning a few quid if you want to use Lionsprep for a decent portion of your meals. Although it’s not exactly bank-breaking if you want to supplement your diet with the boxes a few days a week.

Lions Prep review: the verdict

I enjoyed my two days eating meals from Lionsprep, they tasted good, they were incredibly easy to prepare and they did everything you might expect from a meal delivery service.

The meals were balanced and made it easy to track your calorie intake, if that’s something you’re into, and the emphasis on sustainability gets a thumbs up from me.

Obviously, the price can be a bit off-putting; as you might expect, ready-to-eat meals are more expensive than cooking yourself.

Although, if you can afford it, I don’t think you’ll have any qualms about the product.

Who is Lions Prep for?

For our money, Lions Prep would work well for anyone who’s looking to closely track their calories, as the pre-made meals make it easy to calculate your intake.

Although, if you’re looking to lose weight, check out the NHS’ guidance before embarking on a weight-loss programme to ensure you’re doing it safely and sustainably.

Lions Prep would be great if you’re time-poor but you don’t want to sacrifice eating good quality food.

If you find yourself eating a lot of takeaways each week, Lions Prep might actually save you money and you’ll likely end up eating a much more balanced diet.

Also, Lions Prep might be right for you if you’re looking to expand your tastes and you want to try out some new recipes that you could make again yourself another time.

It seems to us that Lions Prep is better suited to solo diners rather than families or couples as the meals are tailored to each individual, but there's nothing stopping you from sharing a big order!

How does Lions Prep compare to Hello Fresh?

Unlike Lions Prep, Hello Fresh requires you to cook your meals from scratch yourself, it just provides the recipes and the ingredients.

So, while Hello Fresh is more convenient than going to the shops for every meal, you still have to spend between 30 and 90 mins prepping and cooking to make a meal, whereas all of the leg work is removed with Lions Prep.

Lions Prep definitely wins for convenience.
