McDonald’s discontinued favourite ‘returning’ amid new chain and AI plans

McDonald's fans will be excited to hear the restaurant has hinted it's bringing back a discontinued menu favourite which hasn't been seen since 2016.

It's claimed the fast food restaurant is looking to expand its chicken offerings. And part of those plans may mean the return of a long-awaited fan favourite… Snack Wraps.

According to Daily Mail, Maccies want to offer the popular McCrispy chicken sandwich in nearly all global markets by the end of 2025, and hopes to transform the product into both wraps and tenders too.

The move comes as McDonald's plans to expand globally with 10,000 more stores across the world by 2027. The food chain's chicken sales have reportedly now reached $25billion (£20bn) annually, which is now the same as its beef takings, and it continues to grow by the day.

"In the US business, we have three really strong chicken brands between McChicken, Chicken McNuggets and obviously McCrispy,' McDonald's USA President Joe Erlinger said last week. He appeared to confirm the company's plans to turn the Southern-style chicken sandwich, which is served with pickles on a buttered bun, into other items.

He added: "Will we eventually have a crispy tender? Yes. And will that allow us to eventually have a McCrispy Snack Wrap? Yes. But we’re still in the early days of doing that." The original Snack Wrap was first seen back in 2006 and discontinued a decade later when it didn't translate in sales and was labelled too complicated to prepare.

The product consisted of chicken, shredded lettuce and cheese wrapped in a warm tortilla. Other food chains such as Burger King and Wendy’s have released their own version of the wrap in recent years.

McDonald's also announced plans to open an additional 10,000 restaurants across the world over the next four years. If that happens, it will be the fastest period of growth in the company's history.

Maccies is already the world's largest burger chain, with at least 40,000 locations worldwide, but it aims to have a staggering 50,000 restaurants by 2027. Around 900 of the new restaurants will be in the US, while 1,900 will be company-operated and franchised stores in Canada, Germany, the UK and Australia.

The company is also planning to roll out a new chain of restaurants called CosMc's through the first half of next year. One will be near the company’s headquarters in Chicago while the rest will be in Texas. The company will then see how these perform before deciding whether to roll them out further.

CosMc’s is designed to fill a mid-afternoon sales slump and keep up with fast-growing chains like Starbucks, according to Global President and CEO Chris Kempczinski. The rumoured menu includes a churro frappe, a pear-flavoured slush and a turmeric latte.

CosMc’s, which apparently got its name from a space alien mascot introduced in the 1980s, will also serve snacks such as pretzel bites and Egg McMuffins.

McDonald's will be making more use of artificial intelligence too, according to Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet. They said: "We’re focused on making AI more helpful for everyone, with the potential to unlock many new opportunities for innovation.

"The restaurant industry is already benefiting from these advances, and we’re excited to see how McDonald’s will use our generative AI, cloud, and edge computing tools to improve their iconic dining experience for their employees and their customers all over the world."
