DEAR DEIDRE: I SAW the job I’d been promised advertised online while I was on sick leave.
Nobody told me the company had changed its mind about my promotion, and I’m furious.
I’m a 42-year-old guy and I work for a market research firm. I’ve been there for eight years and was starting to get itchy feet.
When I was headhunted for a new job, I told my boss.
They wanted to keep me so offered a promotion with a much higher salary.
They started training me for the role. Then my wife, 38, got sick and I had to take time off to support her and look after our kids.

I assumed the promotion – which got put on hold – would be back on the table when I returned to work.
But last week I was browsing a jobs site when I saw the job advertised.
I spoke to HR and they said they couldn’t give me my promotion due to all my time off, and would reconsider me again in the future when another opportunity came up.
I feel like I’ve been lied to and don’t know what to do.
