A nutritionist has revealed that there is one thing people can do to improve their overall health – but says that it is often overlooked.

Monica D’Agostino, founder of Salt and Sage Nutrition, based in New York, took to TikTok to share the compelling insight.

She revealed that simply increasing your intake of fiber can have numerous medical benefits including around blood sugar levels, weight loss, cholesterol and digestion.

Monica, who has gained more than 629,100 followers on the site by sharing her dieting tips, also shared the best recipes to try for a high-fiber diet at home.

Monica, who has gained more than 629,100 followers by sharing her dieting tips, has a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and a Master’s Degree in Dietetics 

In the TikTok video, posted on MOnday, Monica speaks directly to camera as she begins: ‘Okay, so as a dietitian I feel like people are always looking for that missing piece of something that they can start to implement that is going to improve their overall health.

‘People are always looking for me to be like “this is the missing piece of what is going to fix everything for you.”

‘Unfortunately, there just isn’t a product out there that does that.’

But she continues: ‘There is something that you can do to improve your overall health and that is increase your fiber intake.

‘And this is where I have all of my clients start.

‘A diet that is high in fiber has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels, help to assist with weight loss, help to lower cholesterol, help to aid digestion – the list goes on.

‘Fiber is one of those things that we can increase and we know that we are going to reap the benefits of it and most Americans are not hitting their daily amount of fiber.’

Monica then shares the best recipes to try to ensure a high intake of fiber in meals throughout the day.

The recipes included a breakfast smoothie with blueberries and yoghurt as well as a peanut chicken salad for lunch 

For dinner, Monica suggested a hearty meal of pasta and broccoli with a protein pesto sauce created using tofu

Monica, who has a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and a Master’s Degree in Dietetics, concludes the minute-long video by saying: ‘We’re going to increase our fiber. 

‘We are going to look good, we are going to feel good. It’s going to be great.’

And her followers soon flooded her post with praise and thanked her for pointing them in the right direction.

And a third said: ‘I’ve been thinking I need more fiber in my diet lately, thank you thank you!’

Speaking about her Salt and Sage Nutrition venture as a whole she speaks candidly about her journey on her website.

It states: ‘I grew up loving every single aspect of food; the flavors, the textures, the smells. 

‘I could not get enough of experimenting in the kitchen. 

‘I would spend hours mixing together different ingredients (most of the time it ended up being pretty disgusting to be honest) but I never lost sight of how much I loved to create.’ 

She later revealed that the business is her ‘passion project.’ 

‘THIS is how I want to reach clients, share recipes, and connect with a community of like-minded (and maybe not so like-minded) individuals who have a passion for everything wellness.

‘I created this site to do just that,’ she concluded.

The American Heart Association recommends a total dietary fiber intake of 25 to 30 gram per day.

But advises that this comes directly from food – rather than from supplements.

It is thought that the current dietary fiber intakes among adults in the United States averages around just 15 grams – which is just half the recommended amount.
