People are only just realising why there is a bat on the Bacardi bottle

People are only just noticing what the bat means on a bottle of Barcardi – and there's more to it than most first thought.

The popular rum drink is often found in many personal booze cabinets and is a regular go-to choice behind the bar.

However, even the more seasoned drinkers have not considered what the logo on the tipple actually means.

Well, that is until now.

For those who pay attention to the design of the packaging, then you'll notice a bat on a red background.

Fans on Twitter are familiar with the logo, but were not quite sure what it stood for.

"Just noticed there's a bat on the Bacardi label," one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another added: "Only just now have I cognitively understood that it's a bat on the Bacardi logo."

While a third said: "I don't know much about alcohol but if I ever get to choose a brand, it's always Bacardi because of that funny little bat on the bottle – love that guy."

Someone else admitted: "Today is the first day I noticed there is a handsome bat on the Bacardi label."

"Why is there a bat on the Bacardi bottle," a fifth questioned.

Good job we have some answers!

It turns out that there is a lot of history behind the Cuban originated rum.

According to the official Bacardi website, the alcohol brand was founded on February 4, 1862, by Don Facundo Bacardí Massó.

He bought a small distillery in Santiago de Cuba where he "revolutionises the rum-making process to create a smooth, light-bodied spirit" to create what is now known as Bacardi rum.

So where does the bat come in?

Don's wife Doña Amalia noticed there was a colony of bats hanging within rafters of the distillery her husband just bought.

The wife expressed the importance of bats to the Spanish and Cuban Taíno Indians.

They saw the winged nocturnal animals as symbols of "good health, family unity, and good fortune".

Therefore, Doña Amalia apparently suggested they should choose the symbol of the bat for this very reason.

It is thought locals of the area started to show interest in the tipple and referred to it as “el ron del murcielago” – the rum of the bat.

And there you have it!

Something you can use that to impress your mates down the boozer then…
