Popular hair product could be making your hair feel ‘coarse’ and ‘dry’ – expert

Many people will grab a can of dry shampoo and spray it on between hair washes.

The miracle hair-washing solution soaks up oil and grease so hair appears to look cleaner between washes.

The end look is fresher, less greasy-looking hair that smells pleasant. However, it’s important to know that dry shampoo doesn’t actually wash your hair.

While some dry shampoos can prolong hair colour, add volume and extend the time between washes, you will need shampoo and water to properly wash your hair.

Dry shampoo is incredibly popular and can be found in most supermarkets and beauty stores, but is it good for your hair?

Trichologist Fabian Martinez at The London Hair Clinic has shared exclusively with Express.co.uk whether dry shampoo is bad for your hair.

Fabian said: “Dry shampoo is fine to use every now and then but overusing dry shampoo can lead to scalp problems such as feeling itchy and flaky if used too frequently.

“Essentially, dry shampoo is sprinkled on starch and alcohol product, it doesn’t remove the dirt from the air in the same way shampoo and water does.

“It can also over time make your hair feel very dry and coarse due to the alcohol.”

Dry shampoo is usually made from oil-absorbing ingredients such as clay, rice starch and alcohol.

The formulas usually absorb water-repelling chemicals that make hair look greasy and mucky.

Experts recommend using dry shampoo no more than two days in a row and no more than three months at a time.
