Prince Louis has adorable nickname from older siblings George and Charlotte

Giving cute nicknames to family members is a form of expressing love for them.

The royal family are the latest to show their adoration for the youngest member of the Cambridge household. Prince Louis, four, is called "Lou Lou" by his elder siblings Prince George, nine and Princess Charlotte, seven.

The elder siblings have used the adorable nickname for their younger brother for the past few years now.

Friends of the young royals also use nicknames when referring to George, Charlotte and Louis who are respectively third, fourth and fifth in line to the throne.

Whilst he was a student at Thomas's Preparatory School Battersea, George’s friends called him a tea-inspired nickname based on his initials.

The young prince’s nickname, of "PG" or "Tips" was such a hit, his parents, the Duke of Cambridge and Duchess of Cambridge started using that too.

Charlotte, who is still a student at Thomas’s Battersea has friends who call her Lottie. This nickname appears to be catchy too, as it is now used by Kate Middleton at home too.

It may seem odd, even perhaps amusing to refer to someone who is destined to be king or queen of England, with a cute nickname. However this shows the royal children can have fun and are blending in with the rest of the students well.

It’s not only the royal children who get to enjoy all the nickname fun and games. Kate is a shorter nickname for Catherine and one that has stuck, ever since it was announced she was dating Prince William in 2001.

Prince William in the meantime had one very funny nickname given by his mother the late Princess Diana – she would affectionately call him "Wombat".

Speaking in a NBC interview in 2007, William said: “It began when I was two, I’ve been rightfully told, because I can’t remember back that far, but when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal.

“So, I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a wombat – or maybe I do.”

The Queen, the eldest member of the royal family has also had a few fun nicknames in her time.

Her late husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh called Her Majesty by the nickname "Cabbage". It is thought the name came from the French phrase “mon petit chou” which translates into ‘'my little cabbage’ or "my little pastry puff".

The Queen was also reportedly referred to as “Gary” by the Duke of Cambridge when he struggled to say "Grandma" when he was younger.
