Want to have a great, genuinely helpful tarot reading? There are some questions you should ask… and some you shouldn’t.
I have been reading tarot cards for people all over the world for over 25 years, so I can confidently say I know my stuff.
Ahead, I’d like to share with you some of my tips and insider info to help you get the most out of a tarot reading, including the best things to ask a professional tarot reader.
Be direct and clear
Sometimes you will visit a reader with a very clear idea in mind of what you need to know and, in those instances, tell them straight. Be direct and clear.
Tell them your questions (I’d say no more than six or seven) and make sure they are singular i.e. ‘is John cheating and does he still love me?’ is two separate questions, not one. A singular question ensures you know the card drawn is matched to that exact question vs straddling two separate issues.
If you don’t have a clear idea of anything you need to ask or explore then maybe it’s not the best time to get a reading, just sayin’. Why spend money on a question/answer resource if you don’t have questions about your life right now?
Ask for what you want
Sometimes, however, you might just be seeking inspiration, a mood lift, a booster, a nudge in the right direction, and that’s okay. Make sure your reader knows that.
Still let them know a few basics about you (unless they’re a psychic and an overt part of their service is knowing unknowable things about you) so that they can interpret the cards they draw for you more easily.
Many times, people will come to me for a reading and refuse to share any information or questions. I explain to them that I am not a psychic or a mind reader and they’re not paying good money to enter a guessing game with me, but to find out tangible and useful information about themselves and their trajectory.
As such, sharing their work and relationship status, any major life changes or unresolved questions in their mind is extremely useful for both parties. I can make sure my interpretation of the cards is relevant and tailored, and they are getting much sharper and clearer direction.
Ask about the areas you’re interested in without fear of judgment
You can ask a tarot reader anything really. Love, career, money, family, personal development, yes/no decisions, the week/month/year ahead etc… All services will be confidential, there is no judgment (there is nothing they won’t have already heard and all readers quickly learn that we’re ALL flawed, insecure, afraid, and tempted…).
Avoid health questions
The only topic I think should remain off limits is health diagnosis/treatment advice. The cards were not invented, nor have they evolved, to offer medical advice and are no substitute for professional and considered consultation.
At most, I think tarot can provide an angle on holistic things you can do for yourself for your wellbeing, and maybe also offer some insight into mental health triggers or drivers. However, in terms of diagnosis or treatment advice (or, god forbid, prognosis’s), no.
Ask about relationships, work, and money
By far, the most common theme for readings in my experience is romantic love. It unites all of us: the need to be desired, understood and prioritised.
And, related to that, friendship is another under-rated and common theme. We all want to belong to a group, have people who seek our company, make us smile, share a bond.
Career and money are probably next along the podium. We all worry about work and money. It’s universal.
One thing tarot has taught me is that we’re all the same, really, deep down. Wherever you are in the world, people will be worrying about lovers, friends, work and money! You are not alone.
It’s okay to be unsure
Underpinning all of the themes, the question I find most people asking me is ‘am I on the right path?’.
I think we all obsess over the decisions we’ve made, especially about partner and career, and whether we’re doing what we’re meant to be doing.
I would offer this as reassurance to everyone: life is long, you have time, every experience is valuable and useful, and you can change course, make new choices, and start anew at any age.
