As reported by the MSE, the Centre for Sustainable Energy revealed fitting proper insulation could reduce heat loss by 75 per cent.

This would include using a hot water cylinder jacket – which can be bought for just £18.

It should measure 80mm thick or more, and The Energy Saving Trust estimates this simple move could save Brits £45 per year.

"For most, this will be a DIY job as you just need to wrap it around the hot water cylinder and secure it with string or something similar, but do consult a professional if your tank is hard to reach or you're unsure," the MSE pros said.
