A cosmetic surgeon and biochemist has listed five ways to reduce the risk of developing cancer.  

Dr. Reza Tirgari, 54, from San Diego, California, has gained a TikTok following of more than 522,000 people by sharing his health recommendations.

In a now-viral video, he advised to quit smoking, eat healthy foods and exercise regularly, cut out processed meats, practice safe sex, and wear sunscreen daily.

‘These top five things can keep you out of health risks for a long, long time,’ the doctor said.

Dr. Tirgari’s number one suggestion to prevent cancer is to cut out smoking of any kind. 

He advised to quit smoking cigarettes, vapes or even hookah as it’s terrible for your lungs and can cause irreversible damage. 

‘Anything that doesn’t belong in your lungs, cut it out,’ he said. 

In Australia 90 per cent of lung cancer in men and 65 per cent of lung cancer in women is estimated to be a result of tobacco smoking, according to Cancer Australia. 

It also shouldn’t come as a surprise that eating healthy food and exercising regularly were second on the list.  

Dr Tirgari said obesity has been linked to several different types of cancer – including liver, kidney, and gallbladder cancer – and so keeping fit is the best way to live a healthy lifestyle. 

‘Get that weight under control and get in the gym,’ he said.

Next, Dr Tirgari recommended avoiding processed meats – such as ham and bacon – at all costs. 

‘The World Health Organisation (WHO) actually did a study that showed that salami and all these different types of bacon and cured meats increase your risk of colon cancer – that is correct,’ he said. 

‘Cut these out of your diet and you will live healthier.’ 

Fewer people may understand the importance of practicing safe sex, because STIs can potentially lead to disease or cancer. 

‘We all know the risk of HIV but did you know that hepatitis and HPV are also associated with unsafe sexual practices?’ Dr Tirgari continued. 

Hepatitis greatly increases the risk of liver cancer while HPV can lead to cervical cancer. 

‘If you’re at risk, you may want to consider getting vaccinated as well,’ he added. 

Lastly, sunscreen should be worn daily regardless of the season to lower the risk of skin cancer. 

‘You’ve got to put it on every time you go out of the house whether the sun is shining or not,’ Dr Tirgari explained. 

‘The rates of skin cancer have skyrocketed and sunscreen is your best protection. I use it almost every single day.’ 

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and more than two in three Aussies will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, according to Sun Smart. 

Sunscreen needs to be applied 20 minutes before going outdoors and should be reapplied every two hours.
