Tesco unveiled its new 'premium' £5 meal deal this week – and customers aren't happy about it.

The retailer's meal deals are an affordable go-to for many Brits looking to bag a quick and cheap lunch.

However, Tesco revealed a shake-up this week, where shoppers can get more premium items for £5.

The 'Premium Meal Deal' will sit alongside its standard £3.40 meal deal in shops.

The new £5 range will include a wider variety of items, including meals from brands such as itsu, YO! Sushi, Pollen and Grace, in addition to items from the Tesco Finest range.

Alessandra Bellini, Tesco's Chief Customer Officer, said: "We know our Tesco Meal Deal is hugely popular with our customers, and is a lunchtime staple for millions of people day in, day out.

"But sometimes you want to treat yourself to something a little special, and the new Premium Meal Deal gives our shoppers the opportunity to upgrade their usual lunch choices.

"Featuring a wide range of mains including new Finest and Wicked Kitchen sandwiches and salads, as well as options from itsu, YO! Sushi and Pollen & Grace, there are over four million combinations to be tried.

“What’s more, at only £5 for the full meal, Clubcard members really can enjoy gourmet on the go."

Shoppers with a Tesco Clubcard will find their premium meal deals around £3.74 cheaper than if they bought each item separately.

There's also a lot of choice too with 33 main meal options including Tesco Finest Roast Beef, West Country Cheddar & Truffle Mayo Tiger Roll, the Tesco Finest Chicken & N'duja Wrap and the YO! Rainbow Salmon Poke.

In addition to the mains, customers going for premium are still able to buy drinks and snacks which are accompanied with the standard Meal Deal – such as a bottle of Coca-Cola, Walkers crisps and Cadbury's chocolate bars.

Despite the range of new choices, Tesco customers have been left fuming by the news – as many criticised the more expensive meal deal during a cost of living crisis.

"No thanks @Tesco, there’s a cost of living crisis going on the moment," one shopper wrote on Twitter.

While another added: "Over the next year, I can see me being priced out of meal deals."

"I can just about afford my rent thanks," added a third.

While a fourth wrote: "Tesco’s meal deal doesn’t bang enough for it to be £5. No meal deal should be that much, sorry."

A Tesco spokesperson told Daily Star: "The Premium Meal Deal option has been added to the Tesco offering to make even more options available for customers, and particularly those who do want to upgrade their Meal Deal."

The Tesco Premium Meal Deal is currently available in 1,200 stores around the country for £5 per head with a Clubcard or £5.50 if you don't have one.

The news comes after the standard meal deal was increased 40p from £3 to £3.40 back in October last year after 10 years.

At the time, a spokesperson for the supermarket said: "Clubcard members will pay just £3.40 for a main, snack and drink, making our meal deal an ideal way to grab a great value lunch on-the-go."
