Three items to always order at McDonald's and what to avoid buying from the fast food chain | The Sun

FANS of McDonald's usually have their firm favourites – but are some more worth it than others?

Whether its a Big Mac or a drive-thru coffee, most people havestopped by the golden arches in search of some good value grub.

While the burger chain does serve up some items and deals that hit the spot, there are some that are best left behind on the menu.

Across the board McDonald's often offers value for money fast food options, here are the ones that are worthwhile.

Big Mac

One of the things definitely worth getting your teeth into is the Big Mac especially when you can get the popular burger meal for just £1.99 with a savvy discount hack.

To get the discount all customers have to do is fill out a quick feedback survey.

Your bed is in the wrong place and it’s adding £200 a year to energy bills

You will need an old McDonald's receipt from a previous trip that is no longer than 60 days old.

A 12 digit code will be printed on it and then you just have to enter the McDonald's "Food for Thought" website and fill out a quick survey about your recent visit.

You'll then receive a five digit code which is your voucher for the £1.99 offer that you can take to any McDonald's branch to get a Big Mac and fries.

It normally costs £5.29 so you'll be saving £3.30 through the offer.

Fillet-O-Fish

Another worthy item is the Fillet-O-Fish, costing £4.59 but the fact that this burger is under a fiver is not the best thing about it.

You might have to wait a few minutes when ordering this item, but there is a good reason.

Because the Fillet-O-Fish is not as popular as some of the other burgers on the menu, it is usually cooked to order.

So if you want to be sure that your burger hasn't been sitting already prepared, this is the best choice for you.

Coffee

It's good news for coffee lovers.

A regular latte in McDonald's is priced at a very reasonable £2.09.

When compared to a medium latte in Costa priced at £4.10 it makes the burger chain exceptional value.

A flat white in McDonald's is also priced at £2.09, compared to £3.90 in Costa.

Exact prices on all of the items do vary from store to store depending on where you are in the country, but we found McDonald's to be the cheaper option in a number of locations.

What to avoid

The items on the menu that we think are less than appealing when it comes to spending your hard earned cash are mainly on the breakfast menu.

A muffin with jam costs £1.49 and we think that if this is something you fancy for breakfast, you could do better yourself.

You can get a pack of four toasting muffins from Aldi's own brand for 75p.

If you don't already have butter or jam at home, 250g of butter costs £1.89 and some strawberry jam for £1.49 – but each would serve up several weeks worth of muffins, making it better value for money than Maccies.

Porridge in a pot might seem like a quick on-the-go solution for a rumbling tummy.

Priced at £1.99 it seems quite reasonable, but the reality is you can get a pot of Quaker oats from Sainsbury's in a variety of different flavours for 95p at the moment.

That means you could make the same at home for much less, and even take them on long journeys with a flask of hot water or milk in the car.

Another no-no is the bag of melon on the sides menu priced at 95p.

While it is a healthier option, you can get a whole Honeydew melon from Sainsbury's for £1.79 and just chop it up.

It will probably last you the whole week, depending on how much you portion it out.
