A thrifty mother-of-three has revealed how she transformed her ‘slip and slide’ of a muddy garden into her dream outdoor space using B&Q bargains.

Kerry Bevan, 36, from Doncaster, wanted to overhaul her garden ahead of her husband Neil’s 40th birthday this summer.

Speaking to Latest Deals, the mother explained how she originally wanted to build a patio with a pergola – but thought it might seem too closed off.

She said: ‘After talking about it, [Neil] suggested the post and rope version so it felt more open.’

However, the first challenge the couple faced was trying to clear out some of the mud that had amassed at the bottom of their garden following heavy rain.

Kerry said: ‘The rain was a challenge when we first started. The garden was full of mud and we spent most of our time trying not to slip and slide all over it!’

In order to keep costs down, the couple used leftover paving slabs and turfing from Kerry’s parents’ garden.

To begin with, the couple removed waterlogged grass and then dug holes to secure the patio fence posts in to.

They then erected the patio frame and then laid down the £35 hardcore and decorative pebbles, which cost £4 or a 25kg bag.

To cordon off the seating area, the mother snapped up some B&Q robe – which retails at £2.49 per metre.

Before hanging them up around her new patio, Kerry used black Dylon so they would match the theme of the garden.

Alongside her new garden furniture, Kerry also received a handmade bench – which doubles up as a picnic table – from her crafty father.

She continued: ‘I got Ronseal paint from B&Q for £23 in the shade Tudor Black Oak to paint the fence.

He drew out the 60cm x 60cm square on paper, drew the design on a quarter then transferred this onto the plywood to match the size of the slab.

Adding the final tweaks to the overhauled garden, Kerry picked up some hanging bulb solar lights for £20 from Amazon which are attached to the fence.

She also purchased some more £18.99 solar lights from Amazon that are situated between the patio slabs.

What’s more, the thrifty mother purchased a rattan border for £7.99 from B&M to place around her new flowerbeds – which housed some budge £5 Asda blooms.

‘We painted the slabs with concrete paint and added the stencilling before painting the fence, woodwork and all of the stonework.’

In total, the couple spent four full weekends on the project. If they had to do it again, Kerry said they would hire a cement mixer to lay the slabs.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of Latest Deals, said: ‘Kerry and her husband have made some great savings with this garden project. By using reclaimed turf and paving slabs, they have probably saved £100s on that alone. Really impressive!’
