Adrian Lewis steps back from professional darts with explanation to loyal fans

Former back-to-back world darts champion Adrian Lewis has announced he’s set to take a break from the PDC.

Lewis won the 2011 and 2012 World Darts Championship beating Gary Anderson and Andy Hamilton in the respective finals.

Jackpot was a protege of 16-time world champion Phil Taylor with both coming from Stoke-on-Trent. But after a quiet last couple of years on the professional circuit, Lewis has chosen to park his darts career after dropping to number 36 in the world.

In a post on Twitter, Lewis addressed his absence from the previous PDC tournaments at the beginning of 2023 and revealed that his darts career will take a backseat. Lewis tweeted:

“Dear all, in particular my fans, I feel that your loyalty deserves an explanation for my absence from tournaments. After 20+ years I feel I need a break from the professional circuit for now. Massive thanks for the support from my fans & sponsors @TargetDarts @stokemotorcycle.

Also I'd like to thank @OfficialPDC @PDPA_darts for the opportunity and last but not least my family. Cheers folks Ade.”

Lewis won four major PDC tournaments, lifting the 2015 European Championship and most recently the UK Open in 2018, adding to his previous two world titles.

Jackpot, whose nickname came after he won a jackpot whilst gambling in Las Vegas in 2005 but wasn’t able to collect his winnings due to him being 20 at the time, with the US legal gambling age being 21, joined the PDC in 2004 and has remained an ever-present on the circuit.

Lewis saw his recent World Championship performances fall well below the level the tungsten tussler had shown in the early 2010s, being knocked out in the second round three years in a row.

Fans posted their messages of support and appreciation to Lewis under his social media post, one message read:

“Have a break come back stronger one of the most natural throws in the game.”

“It’s a good decision. Why? Because it's your decision. We, your fans, are behind you. Enjoy your time, when you come back, we're there for you, no matter what. Team Jackpot <3”
