BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022 – SPOTY latest winner odds: Matt Fitzpatrick price slashed after US Open victory | The Sun

MATT FITZPATRICK is firmly in the running to be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022.

That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've slashed the golfer's odds from more than 100/1 to 8/1 over the last 24 hours.

England's Fitzpatrick fought off competition from Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris to claim his first major title with a one-shot victory in the US Open at Brookline.

He became just the third Englishman in 52 years to win golf's second oldest major.

After landing the title, he said: "It's what you grow up dreaming of.

"It's something I've worked so hard for for such a long time. I've got to give myself credit: I had so much patience."

Fitzpatrick still trails frontrunner Ronnie O’Sullivan (3/1), who claimed a record-equalling seventh World Championship title in Sheffield earlier this year.

The Englishman became the oldest world champion in Crucible history, and drew level with Stephen Hendry.

O’Sullivan has won 39 ranking titles and is fancied to add an altogether different trophy to his collection when the award is dished out in December.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: "After Matt Fitzpatrick’s thrilling maiden major victory at the US Open, the Sheffield-born golfer is now 8/1 to win this year's BBC Sports Personality award, with Ronnie O'Sullivan the 3/1 favourite."

Tyson Fury (7/1) was the previous SPOTY favourite after beating Dillian Whyte in his last fight before strongly hinting at retirement.

Fury produced a stunning one-punch stoppage in front of 94,000 people at Wembley Stadium to retain his WBC title.

The 33-year-old famously protested at his inclusion but was still named on the six-athlete shortlist for the award last year.
