Darts player’s interview crashed by rival wearing Newcastle United jacket

Rising darts star Niko Springer was conducting an interview when he was abruptly interrupted by a fellow player – and Newcastle fan.

The 22-year-old spoke to Online Darts after defeating Scott Williams 6-4 in the opening round at the International Darts Open. The German surged into a 4-1 lead and eventually triumphed despite a late comeback from his opponent.

As Springer assessed his performance, Williams proceeded to step into the camera shot while wearing a Newcastle United jacket. “What are you talking to him for?” the world No. 58 said, before quickly disappearing out of shot.

Springer sported somewhat of an awkward smile when he was interrupted during the interview. One darts fan wasn’t impressed with Williams’ actions as they said: “Scott Williams loves himself a bit too much.” Following his victory, Springer backed it up with an emphatic win over Premier League star Dimitri Van den Bergh.

The youngster showed just how much potential he has with a dominant 6-1 victory over the world No. 9. Springer dedicated his extra special victory to his late grandmother as the day marked the anniversary of her death.

"This year is the anniversary of my grandmother's death,” he said. “And that is why I just told Dimi that I am playing for my grandmother today. I hope she's okay. I did my best.”

Although the German had played in the afternoon session, there were about 4000 spectators present and they made sure their voices were heard as Springer fed off the electric atmosphere. "I absolutely enjoy playing here in such a packed house.," he added. "But I also know that my training (to become a lawyer) is an absolute priority. I just take what I can and I am certainly happy with the super support.

"Every game is a lot of experience. I know I can play. But I also know that Damon is a very good player. I'm looking forward to it. Just play and see what happens." Springer faced Damon Heta in the next round and his campaign came to an end after suffering a 6-3 defeat to the Australian. Gerwyn Price went on to win the tournament.

Springer competed in the International Darts Open last year and reached the third round defeating Jermaine Wattimena and Brendan Dolan. In an interview last year, Springer revealed how he got into darts and stated who his biggest idol was. "Jelle Klaasen. I was already very fascinated by him at the 2016 World Championship,” he said. “That hasn't changed until today. I started playing darts in 2016.

"Before that I played football, but had to stop because of an injury. Coincidentally, at that time the World Championships took place, which really got me into this sport."
