'Drunk as hell' – Brecel reveals boozy preparation for stunning O'Sullivan win

Luca Brecel is into his first World Championship semi-final after beating Ronnie O’Sullivan and he has revealed some unique preparation for his clash with the Rocket.

The Belgian Bullet said earlier in the tournament that he has barely practiced ahead of the Crucible, choosing to come in relaxed and fresh instead.

It appears to be working as he had never won a match at the venue before but has now beaten Ricky Walden, Mark Williams and the world number one to make the final four, winning seven frames on the spin to claim a 13-10 victory.

Not only has Brecel been away from the practice table, but he has been living it up and getting on the sauce even during the tournament.

He has been driving to and from his home in Belgium in between matches, and says that after downing Williams in the last 16 he hit the beers in style.

‘Before the tournament I was just out partying, staying up late, 6am, 7am, playing FIFA, having drinks, not practicing,’ he told the BBC.

‘Even after I beat Mark Williams I went home, got home at 7am by car and that same day we went out again till 5am, drunk as hell.

‘Then the next day I had to drive back here, so it’s totally different preparation.’

Brecel is happy for people to know about his unusual preparation, saying he is fuelled by any criticism he gets.

‘I even put it on social media because I don’t care what people think. Someone said to me, “you better win it now after going out”.

‘For me, it’s a case of entertaining myself maybe because I know if I put it on social media people are going to talk about it, so I have something that motivates me, I want to prove them wrong. It’s all a bit of a game.’

Asked just how much he had to drink in between matches he said: ‘Too much probably, I wasn’t sick or anything but I was gone.’

Brecel now takes on either Anthony McGill or Si Jiahui in an unlikely semi-final which guarantees a first time finalist.
