England rugby star Dominic Young, 22, rushed to hospital after brain infection leaves him unable to open and close eyes | The Sun

ENGLAND rugby league star Dominic Young was rushed to hospital after contracting a brain infection that left him unable to open his eyes.

The new Sydney Roosters recruit, 22, is expected to make a full recovery after suffering from a sinus infection that spread to his brain.

Young flew back to the UK from Sydney to take part in England's three-Test series against Tonga when he first complained of headaches and was said to be unwell last weekend before the team met up for camp.

The winger initially thought the issue would correct itself until he became extremely sensitive to light and then was unable to open or close his eyes.

Young was forced to miss England's 22-18 win over Tonga on Sunday but manager Michael Cincotta said the player is recovering well from the brain infection with the help of antibiotics.

Cincotta said: "I spoke to Dom yesterday and he says things are heading in the right direction and his eyes are getting back to normal.

"I'm confident after speaking to Dom that he'll make a full recovery."

Young has remained in hospital as a precaution and won't feature in England's two further Tests against Tonga.

The England star is expected to return to Australia soon as he prepares for his first season at Bondi.

England coach Shaun Wane said "We'll check in on him earlier this week but it's doubtful [he'll play in this series]".

Young scored 25 tries for Newcastle last year and is competing for a right-wing spot in the England team with Joseph Suaalii and Daniel Tupou.

The Roosters begin their 2024 season in Las Vegas next March and Young is expected to play a part in the showpiece game.

About his chances of appearing for the Roosters next season, Cincotta said: "He is not 100 per cent over it yet – it was pretty severe – but he is on the mend and after a bit of a break he will be right to rejoin the Roosters.

"It is a blow as he was really looking forward to playing for England against Tonga – he will have to wait for his next chance now."
