Fans claim Joe Root 'happy it only hit the stumps' as England star suffers farcical Cricket World Cup dismissal | The Sun

JOE ROOT gave away his wicket against the Netherlands at the Cricket World Cup in farcical manner.

The England star was bowled by Logan van Beek after getting in an almighty tangle while failing to pull off a switch hit.

Root, 32, has been far from his best at the tournament – with England already eliminated in the group stage.

Against their European neighbours, England started well – but Root was out for just 28 runs from 35 balls.

He threw away his wicket trying to pull off a shot which saw the ball miss the bat, fly through his legs and clatter into the stumps.

And fans are convinced that Root would actually be counting his blessings.

One fan posted: "Joe Root played the dumbest shot ever in the history of Cricket."

A second joked: "Trust me Joe Root was happy it just hit the stumps."

A third wrote: "Ball just missed the b***s and hits the bails."

England was able to recover from the wicket and bat their way to 339 runs after 50 overs.

Much of this was down to the superb innings' from Dawid Malan (87) and Ben Stokes' late hitting – making 108, his first World Cup century.

England are currently bottom of the table and risk missing out on the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
