Gerwyn Price urged to tone down wild celebrations by darts icon Phil Taylor

Gerwyn Price is renowned for his exuberant celebrations on the oche and his no-nonsense comments away from it.

As a result, he attracts plenty of heat from crowds and is often booed during matches. He has his supporters too, in his native Wales of course, while his name was chanted at times during the recent World Cup of Darts in Germany, where he produced his best form of the year so far.

For darts legend, Phil Taylor’s liking, The Iceman takes it too far at times. During the PDC’s latest Darts Show podcast, The Power was asked about the current crop of players, and his message to Price was clear.

“Calm it down a little bit,” he said. “Do it at the right times, I would say. He did a lovely 170 [checkout] at the weekend [at the World Cup] when the German lad [Martin Schindler] was sitting on double top.”

Taylor was asked about Price after discussing his stormy rivalry with Paul Nicholson at the start of the 2010s. Nicholson certainly got under his skin, sitting down during a Taylor walk-on and even waving him off after beating him at a tournament.

“The only one that got really under my skin was Paul Nicholson,” recalled Taylor. “I thought that [sitting down during the walk-on] was funny. I thought ‘you’re an idiot, the crowd are going to go mental at you now’.

“And he wasn’t the person to take it. For how brash he was, he’s very sensitive and he’d break his heart about it. I remember saying to him, ‘Paul, don’t do it because you’ll only make a rod for your own back’.

“When you’re labelled with that, that’s what you’re going to get every time you play. You’ll be booed, like Gerwyn does.”

Taylor is preparing for his next tournament after joining the World Seniors Tour. The Power, a losing finalist at the World Masters Seniors in May, will be part of the field in Hull for the World Seniors Matchplay from July 1 to 3.
