Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki

Before Northern Irish star Rory McIlroy married Erica Stoll, he was engaged to tennis superstar Caroline Wozniacki.

They began dating in 2011, and were a couple when they were top of their game.

McIlroy scooped won his first major that year, while the Danish star finished the year as world No1.

They got engaged in 2014, but when it came to handing out wedding invites – Rory got cold feet.

He announced in a statement: "There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people. The problem is mine.

"The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.

"I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting."

Dustin Johnson and Paulina Gretzky

Two lovebirds that are still going strong are Dustin Johnson and American beauty Paulina Gretzky.

They began dating in 2012, although amusingly Paulina's famous dad ice hockey legend dad Wayne Gretzky came along.

“I don’t know if you can call it a date since my dad tagged along,” she joked.

Despite Wayne being a third wheel, they embarked on a whirlwind romance and were engaged within a year.

The Gretzky family are considered to have helped Johnson find his best form in winning two majors.

Johnson and Gretzky didn't marry until 2022, when they finally said their 'I do's' at a stunning ceremony at the luxurious Blackberry Farm in Tennessee.

The pair have two sons together, Tatum and River.

But, before he settled down with the Swedish beauty he had an on/off relationship with tennis star, Ana Ivanovic.

The pair first dated in 2010, but broke up just 18 months later, according to reports.

At the time, Ivanovic – who was world No1 – blamed the split for tumbling out of the top 20.

However, their rekindled their love affair in 2012, after they were spotted cheering each other on at their events.

But that didn't last long, with a 2013 break-up attributed to constant travelling and hardly being able to see each other.

Ana moved on from Adam with German football legend Bastian Schweinsteiger, who she married in 2016 and has three children with.

Adam Scott and Kate Hudson

You would have thought Adam would have been put off a high-profile romance, after his brief coupling with Hollywood A-lister Kate Hudson in 2009.

The pair were all over the tabloids for the brief few months they dated.

After Adam’s Mercedes-Benz Championship appearance, Kate and Adam were first spotted with a group of friends at Kapalua Resort, Hawaii looking cosy.

However, Aussie hunk Scott was quick to pour cold water over any dating rumours.

"I'm not here with her but I know Kate," Scott said.

"We met here (for the first time). We have a mutual friend so we met through him."

The Swiss tennis had already had a penchant for dating fellow sports stars, including Sol Campbell, Radek Stepanek and Magnus Norman.

She admitted: "It's one of the consequences of fame and a lot of people can't handle it.

"If you are a guy and successful, the attention from the girls is twice as big and they don't even have to be pretty, it's so unfair.

"But guys are intimidated by fame. I'm proud of what I've achieved but it is difficult to find a person strong enough to cope with it all and respect me at the same time."
