Jonjo Shelvey set to trigger Newcastle contract extension worth £3 MILLION amid battle to qualify for Europe | The Sun

JONJO SHELVEY is set to trigger a £3million contract extension, according to reports.

The Toon star began the season with a hamstring injury, but has returned to action in recent weeks.

Boss Eddie Howe is a fan of the midfielder, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

According to the Mirror, one more appearance will trigger a one-year extension in the deal – worth £3m.

His next outing will be his 200th for Newcastle, and he outlined his happiness in the North East last summer.

He said: "You’re always playing for a new contract and I’m not thick, I’m not getting younger.

"It’s a really good place to be at the minute, the city is buzzing. My missus and kids love it up here."

If Newcastle were worried about the clause, they could have looked to sell Shelvey last summer.
