The Reds are in desperate need of midfield additions with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho seemingly past their best, and Naby Keita out of contract in June.

A move for Bellingham was considered a top priority with initial discussions taking place over the weekend.

But those plans have fallen through.

Borussia Dortmund are believed to want around £135million plus add-ons should they decide to sell their prized asset this summer.

The club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, believe an outlay of that size in addition to lucrative wages and agents' fees would severely limit Liverpool's ability to sign other players this summer.

A protracted battle with several other interested parties could further increase Bellingham's fee and see Liverpool miss out on alternative targets.

Reports suggest Liverpool could sign two or even three midfielders instead, and bookmakers Betfair believe Mason Mount is most likely to arrive on Merseyside at odds of 5/2.

The 24-year-old's current deal runs out in 2024 and he is said to have rejected offers of around £200,000-a-week.

Long-term target Ruben Neves, 26, is next at 3/1 after claims that Wolves are resigned to losing their £50million-rated midfielder.

World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister of Brighton is priced at 6/1, but a battle with Manchester United could throw a spanner in the works.

West Ham's Declan Rice and Leicester playmaker James Maddison complete the list at odds of 9/1 and 14/1 respectively.
