Luke Humphries ‘makes darts look a doddle’ by routing Cross despite 103 average

Luke Humphries put on a clinic to brush aside Rob Cross in the Grand Slam of Darts final – despite Voltage averaging 103.61 and hitting 40% on his doubles.

Cool Hand Luke put on a showcase performance in front of the Aldersley Leisure Village crowd in Wolverhampton on Sunday evening (November 19) to land a £150,000 pay packet and simultaneously become favourite to win the 2024 PDC World Darts Championships at Alexandra Palace.

The 28-year-old built on the first major victory of his career at the World Grand Prix in October to win 16-8 against the former world champion hours after beating James Wade in the semi-finals, as Wayne Mardle called his performance a 'privilege to watch'.

Ranked number four in the world, Humphries won all three group matches including a demolition of Gary Anderson before ending the campaigns of Ryan Searle and Anderson in the knockout stages – before Wade and Cross.

Taking to social media, one fan said: "He was incredible and will take some beating at the worlds." A second agreed: "Any top player with 4 darts in hand would have struggled to compete tonight, unreal."

A third posted: "Best player in the world, unreal performance." A fourth replied: "Luke Humphries that was sensational. He's going to be hard to stop." A fifth said: "Luke Humphries makes darts look a doddle."

Humphries said after the game that he felt tired with the hectic format, but admitted that both he and Cross played well to give the crowd a night to remember.

In his second major final victory in just 42 days, Humphries averaged 104.69 and his 59.6% of his doubles while smashing home eight maximums and hitting another 30 140s.

When asked if he felt like the best player in the the world on Sky Sports, Humphries said: "Maybe today. Maybe for the last few weeks but I'm just happy to be the best player in the world for today."

He then added: "I think I could get a lot lot better." The Berkshire man then pointed to his father in the crowd and said: "If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here with silverware. Love you Dad."

Cross said: "To be fair the best man won on the night, he was quality. Maybe missing three darts at tops got in my head but the best man won tonight."

Humphries is now the bookies favourite before the biggest tournament of the year at Ally Pally, which runs from December 15 until January 3.
