Mason Greenwood and Man United’s statements on his future are slammed as ‘misleading’ after he claimed he was ‘cleared of all charges’ – when they were actually dropped by his accuser

Mason Greenwood and Manchester United have been slammed on social media after the player’s statement over his future claimed he was ‘cleared of all charges’.

The Red Devils confirmed on Monday that the 21-year-old will leave the club, after both parties agreed that it was better to let him recommence his career ‘away from Old Trafford’.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted rape. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently dropped the charges after key witnesses withdrew and new material came to light.

OLIVER HOLT: Shame on Manchester United. Pathetic indecision over Mason Greenwood got them into a terrible mess. This is no time to congratulate them

It is vanishingly rare that anyone involved with the running of a Premier League organisation accepts that anything is more important than money or that any behaviour, however unpalatable, distasteful or obscene, should be allowed to stand in the way of the nakedness of greed.

But when Manchester United announced on Monday afternoon that Mason Greenwood, once the most exciting young player in the English game, would be leaving the club, it appeared that they had, reluctantly, spinelessly and thoroughly devoid of conviction, come to that conclusion.

United deserve some credit for doing the right thing in the end and revealing that the 21-year-old, who was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted rape, charges that were dropped last February after key witnesses withdrew and new material came to light, is likely to leave on loan or see his contract settled.

Man United manager Erik ten Hag ALREADY has a Mason Mount problem – the £60m star is too similar to captain Bruno Fernandes

Erik ten Hag has 99 problems and Mason Mount is an unexpected one. The Manchester United manager already knows about the goalkeeping situation, the Harry Maguire situation, the lack of depth in defensive midfield and striker, the struggles of his expensive wingers and their lifeless performance against Wolves.

What perhaps came as a surprise were the initial struggles of marquee summer signing Mason Mount.

In splashing out £60million on the England midfielder from Chelsea, Ten Hag felt he was getting a proven and experienced Premier League asset, one who would not need much time to adapt to the English top-flight, a signing he could ‘plug and play’.

Old Trafford was in its usual state of steady traffic an hour after Manchester United announced that Mason Greenwood would be leaving on Monday.

A fair few of those passing across the famous forecourt outside the East Stand, a commuter path, were unsure of what to make of United’s stand.

Some were conflicted. Others less so. One fan in his 20s, kitted in an old blue away shirt sponsored by Sharp, said: ‘It’s a joke, he should still be playing for United.’

MIKE KEEGAN: The inside story of why Mason Greenwood will NEVER play for Man United again

When the Crown Prosecution Service announced they had withdrawn charges against Mason Greenwoodit was the worst outcome for Manchester United.

They had acted swiftly to suspend the player on the day he was arrested in January 2022 — hours after deeply disturbing images and audio were posted online.

United put their faith in the justice system. But a year later came the news that there would be no trial, no judge, no jury and most importantly no verdict. In the eyes of the law, the 21-year-old was an innocent man, but it would be left to the club to make the call. The ball was back in their court — and not many had seen it coming…
