Man Utd and Tottenham enter Sven Botman transfer race as they look to battle Newcastle and AC Milan for Lille defender | The Sun

MANCHESTER UNITED and Tottenham are interested in signing Lille star Sven Botman, according to reports.

The centre-back, 22, is in high demand this summer following an impressive campaign.

Newcastle wanted to sign him in January but failed to agree a fee with the French side, who rejected a bid worth £30million.

But Toon retain an interest in the defender along with AC Milan, United and Spurs, according to Gianluca DiMarzio.

However, the journalist claims Milan are not prepared to meet Lille's asking price which is believed to be around £34-38m.

Lille's hefty demands could play into the hands of the Premier League sides who will likely have a bigger budget than Milan.

After a move collapsed in January Botman admitted he is expecting to make the next step in his career this summer.

He is intrigued by the project at Newcastle but it is possible the chance to work with his compatriot Erik ten Hag at United also appeals to him.

Botman said of his future in February : "Everyone says about Newcastle – it's all about money.

"But it's a very nice project, if you look at where Man City and PSG started. I think it would be very nice to be part of that, but Milan is a beautiful club."

Botman added: "I'm fine at Lille for the time being. I assume that I will take a good step in my career next summer.

"You never know in football. This time both Newcastle and Milan were in very concrete talks.

"Both clubs have their positive points."

Botman has also spoken of United's interest previously and revealed he would be keen on an Old Trafford switch.

He said last summer: "It is a good compliment when you hear these clubs are interested.

"I’m lying if I say it’s not interesting me — it’s the first time such big clubs are linked to me — but it was early days because in January I was only at Lille for half a season.

"It was nice to hear but I was focusing on Lille and I’m still doing this. After the season I will enjoy a vacation and see what happens next.

“If I’m honest, the Premier League is one of the leagues I dreamed about… but also Serie A, La Liga, the Bundesliga. The Premier League is something special. It’s the football I really like and that fits me."
