Man Utd need to f***ing wake up.. and here's how they can sort out the mess, says club legend Berbatov | The Sun

DIMITAR BERBATOV has urged Manchester United to "f***ing wake-up" after the dismal defeat to Tottenham.

The Red Devils were outplayed as they lost 2-0 to Spurs in their second game of the Premier League season.

Berbatov, 42, has claimed that once Pape Matar Sarr netted the opener in the 49th minute, Spurs were on top of the game.

The Bulgarian argued that United need more "concentration and consistency" in the final third and that will help them score more goals.

He told Betfair: "Tottenham scored one and the belief grew and they kept pushing. To be honest, you can't take anything away from Spurs. They had a good game, especially in the second half.

"It's just one game, of course, Spurs need to build on that, and United need to f*****g wake up as soon as possible.

"When you don't score, and you miss a good opportunity to score, which United had with Rashford and Bruno Fernandes' headers, you give a chance to the opposition to regroup and come back strong, this will happen in football.

"The second half for United was especially bad.

"The first half was okay, they had a couple of chances to score, as did Spurs, who hit the post, but it's a different story when you score first – you can still lose the game sometimes but when you score first and if you're a good team that knows how to keep a lead then it's going to be easy to do it.

"In the case of United, no. The second half was pretty much the same as the first game against Wolves.

"Concentration and consistency helps you to score. This is where United need that typical centre forward striker who is 90-95 per cent going to score with the good chances they create.

"Let’s hope the service will come flying towards Rasmus Hojlund, because he is going to be there, he's tall and he will hopefully score goals."

So far this season, United have netted once in their opening two games with Raphael Varane the only player to get his name on the scoresheet.

Berbatov believes that the club need to bring in another defensive midfielder to help Casemiro and that by doing so it will help stop teams that are more "risk-taking".

He also thinks that once Rasmus Hojlund is fit then star player Marcus Rashford can get back to his best.

This is because he can return to his favoured position on the left side of the attack rather than as the central forward.

Berbatov added: "I think we all know that he prefers to play on the wing, going inside, cutting in and scoring and doing everything that he can do with his quick feet.

"Manchester United need to fill the position of a striker, Rashford probably doesn't like playing as a nine. Him and Ten Hag need to talk about it.

"The manager might explain to him that he needs to fill the boots of striker at the moment. As much as you may not like it, you need to try your best to do it. It's probably not working out so far.

"Rasmus Hojlund needs to come back and be integrated into the team injury free, you can't rush it.

"They'll get the ball in the box to him and leave Rashford to do what he can do, going from the wings to use the space to cut inside, cross or shoot.

"At the moment, when a player plays out of position, I can understand why they might not happy because you know that your strong qualities are not going to show and you're going to suffer because of that."

Rashford came under criticism after the defeat against Spurs as club legend Roy Keane claimed he "looked like a child" while on the pitch.
