Newcastle release green and white Saudi-inspired kit despite insisting there is no connection between country and owners | The Sun

NEWCASTLE UNITED have released their controversial Saudi Arabia-inspired third kit.

An image of the kit was leaked in May and was instantly met with fierce criticism.

Now it is officially available for the Toon Army to buy.

Green and white are the two colours on the Saudi flag, with the new outfit bearing a striking resemblance to the one worn by the Gulf state’s national team.

The kit has a green crest and green trim on the neck and sleeves of a white shirt.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) owns 80 per cent of Newcastle.

And the club said: “Newcastle United has launched its official 2022-23 Castore third kit ahead of the new Premier League season.

“Closely following the unveiling of its classic black and white home kit for the new campaign, the club has revealed a white and green third kit, designed by the premium British sportswear brand, that will be worn on the road.”

The Magpies insisted to the Premier League there was no connection between the Saudi state and PIF.

And the kit launch comes a day after Newcastle confirmed that noon.com – “the Middle East’s leading online shopping destination” – has become their official sleeve sponsor for the upcoming season.

A statement read: “The partnership will provide the club with new ways to engage with fans in the Middle East, with supporters in the region able to pre-order all 2022/23 Newcastle United kits on noon.com with the option of personalisation.

“The noon.com brand will be displayed on all team kits for the upcoming season, as well as having a presence on matchdays at St. James' Park and across the club's digital assets.”

The Toon Army instantly took to Twitter to voice their displeasure back in May after the leak.

One supporter tweeted: “Now where did they get the inspiration from for this I wonder?”

Another commented: “Looks quite smart but yeah, Saudi boys.”

A fellow Toon follower wrote: “That’s the most Saudi Arabian styled kit you’ll ever see!”

Meanwhile, Newcastle have finally struck a £39million deal to sign defender Sven Botman from Lille.
