Newcastle vs Arsenal – Premier League LIVE: Latest scores and updates

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal – Premier League LIVE: Even start at St James’ with both struggling to create clear chances as Jorginho wears the captain’s armband in the absence of Martin Odegaard

Follow Mail Sport’s live blog for all the latest team news, scores and updates from St James’ Park as Newcastle United host Arsenal in the Premier League.

Huge chance for Newcastle

The Magpies have a rare chance in the game from a fee-kick into the box. Burn headed down at the far post where Wilson stood but the forward could only fire over the bar from close range.

The offside flag went straight up but it would have been a tight one for VAR if it had hit the back of the net.

Corners galore

More pressure on the Newcastle goal following a period of dominance from the away side. Declan Rice has been the main driving force in the last few minutes, breaking up play and darting towards to the opposition goal.

At this rate it’ll only be a matter of time until they break the deadlock.

Scare for the Gunners

Newcastle’s press nearly resulted in a comedy own-goal for the away side when Gabriel fizzed a pass back to his goalkeeper.

Fortunately for Arsenal, Raya’s touch was assured and he quikly offloaded the pass onto an Arsenal defender.

Arsenal starting to tick

The Gunners have just started to impose themselves on the hosts. Saka’s influence is growing in the game and the away side have stepped up the pitch to control the ball and much of the play.

Arsenal content with Newcastle possession

The home side have had the majority of the ball in the early exchanges. Arsenal are looking to steal the ball high up and have been waiting for a chance to pounce.

Pressure from the off

Newcastle have sprung out of the traps. It’s been a high intensity start but no shots on goal as of yet.

Warm-ups are underway

Injuries mounting up for Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has hinted that Gabriel Jesus, who is out with a hamstring injury, may not be ready to return right after the international break.

The Brazilian has had a torrid time with injury, having undergone two knee surgeries within two weeks.

‘I cannot guarantee that we are trying to get that recovery as quick as possible,’ he said.

No Odegaard for the Gunners

Arsenal are without their skipper Martin Odegaard for their trip to Newcastle tonight.

The Gunners have stated that their captain ‘is not fit for today’s squad.’

But the 24-year-old, who came on and scored in midweek, has been carrying an injury in recent weeks.

Was his introduction when Arsenal were losing heavily against West Ham to blame for his absence today?

Updates from around the Premier League

Arsenal team news

Tomiyasu comes into the defence, while Jorginho takes the armband and Havertz is trusted in midfield.

Newcastle team news

It’s all change for Eddie Howe as he reverts to his trusted starting XI. Only Anthony Gordon, Joellinton and Sean Longstaff remain from the midweek win.

The recent match-ups

Was Wednesday night just a blip for the Gunners?

Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season against West Ham on Wednesday having navigated the early part of the season with relative ease.

The Gunners are yet to show the sparkling attacking play that spurred them onto a suprising title tilt last term but their ability to win games without playing well is a sign of their progress.

However, after their 3-0 loss, tonight’s tricky tie holds even greater significance. Mikel Arteta was quick to take responsibility for his much-changed team’s lacklustre performance and we can expect to see a return to the familiar starting XI tonight.

But what answers will the north London club provide from this stern test?

Howe much will Eddie change his team?

The Newcastle manager masterminded a stunning 3-0 victory against Manchester United with a second-string starting XI that was picked with an eye on tonight’s game.

But the degree to which the agpies fringe players excelled may just have given Howe a few selection headaches. The likes of Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall will almost certainly drop back out, despite their superb performances, in favour of stalwarts Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn.

However, Joe Willock could see himself gain a starting berth after scoring on his return to the team at Old Trafford.

Good evening and welcome to Mail Sport’s live coverage of Arsenal’s trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle.

It promises to be an intriguing fixture with compelling storylines whichever way the game goes so make sure to stay tuned as we lead up to the 5.30pm kick-off!
